Has anyone played the VtM "Ashes to Ashes" scenario? (V20)

I scheduled to storytell this module in July, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure how many sessions it will take to reach the ending.

I looked it up on YouTube and found a video of someone playing just Chapter 1, Baptism by Fire, for 6 hours.

However, I couldn't find a full playthrough video (maybe I just missed it).

Since my players include both office workers and students, scheduling might get difficult if the module requires too many sessions.

We plan to play online using Discord and FVTT.

Since we aren't meeting in person, I feel like the session pace might be a bit slower.

For those who have actually run or played *Ashes to Ashes*, how many sessions did it take for your group to finish it?

I'm curious about how much preparation Storytellers usually do before starting a session.

For instance, you might decide on and write down settings for a few locations in the city, along with the characters and events players could encounter there.

But what do you do when your players want to go somewhere completely different from what you've prepared?

While you can guide their actions to some extent, prioritizing player freedom often means drifting far from the original plan.

At that point, it feels like everything has to be improvised, which makes storytelling feel quite overwhelming.

I'd love to know how you handle these situations and just how much prep you actually do.

I tried character creation today, and while I’ve heard the explanation and effects of Dedicated Tools, coming up with one is just as hard as writing the character’s backstory.

Does a Dedicated Tool have to be held in my hand to use magic? Or is just carrying it enough? I’m feeling especially lost because the tool is supposed to be related to the Nimbus in some way.

Could anyone share some examples of Dedicated Tools? My Storyteller is asking me to define the form, material, (tool's) backstory, and how it relates to the Nimbus.

I think seeing a few different examples would make it much easier to brainstorm.

I’m planning to start storytelling for the first time in a month or two using Ashes to Ashes, but since there are so many VtM books out there, I’m not sure which ones I should get afterward to keep the story going. I’m planning to adapt it a bit and run it using V20.

Of course, I know that creating my own chronicle tailored to the PCs’ stories is the best option. However, I personally find it easier—and appealing—to build on ideas and stories already written by the authors while still developing the PCs’ narrative within that framework.

For those who may not know or remember, here’s a brief summary: Ashes to Ashes is the very first VtM scenario module. Set in 1991, the PCs, who were living in Gary, are sent by Prince Modius of Gary to introduce themselves to Prince Lodin of Chicago. However, Lodin has gone missing at that time, and the PCs are mistaken for assassins. They are then forced into a situation where they must investigate who kidnapped Lodin.

Depending on the PCs’ choices, Lodin may live or die. Considering the starting year and the number of books set in Chicago, I think it would also be fine to move the setting to nearby areas around Chicago.

For now, the books I currently own are Chicago by Night 1st and 2nd editions, Under a Blood Red Moon, and Dust to Dust.

I’ve also seen positive reviews for The Succubus Club book, and overall it seems like there are a lot of ways to continue after this scenario. Are there any books you would recommend?

Since I’ll be playing with friends, I think we’ll be able to continue the campaign for a long time, and if possible, I’d like to buy as many of the related books as I can.
