A lot of people thought that he uses some kind of demonic power, for example the demon of pain, especially after his ability was revealed to deal dmg to himself, but i think this is not the case.

From his title we know he is called "The Ashen Exorcist", meaning that he surely must have something to do with fire, perhaps his magic abilities and the runic tattoos on his arms are connected to this. Also because of the vibrant colors many people said that he must have something to do with demonic powers, which is clearly not the case, because the demons visuals are those many abstract colors, and his visuals are like fire going through them sort of like a holy fire. Leading me to believe that his ability burns him, explaining why he deals dmg to himself, but we'll see.
