Considering buying a 74

Looking for some advice. I'm considering buying a 1974 beetle. Exterior is cherry. Paint is pheromonal. Chrome trim around the blinkers has some rust but nothing major. Frunk opens, spare is there as well as the tools. Engine looks in good order but I know squat about air cooled. I'm willing to learn. It was given a once over by a reliable and reputable ship nearby that specializes in classics. I know parts are available online. I have a garage, I have tools and I have folks with knowledge willing to help. What I don't have is experience or confidence.

Hoping for some advice from folks in the know...

A. It smelled like gas while driving... Correct to assume that is from the fact that it's got no catalytic converter? Not a knock you out smell but it was there

B. Drum breaks... What kind of feel should I expect at the pedal? I was shocked at how far and hard I had to jam on the pedal to get it to stop. Yes, I've driven cars without ABS but this is the first one with no disc offset in the front.

Thanks!
