LG 34GX900A-B vs AW3425DW
Hi everyone,
I’m currently trying to decide between two monitors and finding it difficult.
Right now I’m running an LG 34GN850-B, and I’m looking to switch to OLED. The two options I’ve narrowed it down to are the LG 34GX900A-B and the Alienware AW3425DW.
Unfortunately, New Zealand doesn’t get some of the other models I was interested in, like the MSI MPG 341CQPX or the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG34WCDM which use the newer 5th-gen QD-OLED panels, so these two seem to be the best options available here.
My main concerns are the coating (glossy vs matte) and the curve radius.
I’ve been a bit of an LG fan since the LG 27GL850-B days, those IPS monitors felt amazing at the time and were some of the only ones where ghosting didn’t feel super noticeable to me. Because of that, I’m pretty used to LG’s matte coating and I’ve never really had an issue with it. It’s also nice not needing a perfectly light-controlled room to enjoy the monitor.
That said, I keep hearing that glossy panels look significantly better, especially with OLED, better clarity, punchier colors, etc. I don’t have any personal experience with glossy monitors though, so I’m not sure how overstated (or understated) this difference actually is in real use.
My other concern is the curve. The LG 34GN850-B I’m currently using has an 1800R curve, which feels pretty comfortable but also fairly subtle. The LG OLED option uses an 800R curve, which seems like a pretty aggressive jump.
I’m curious how noticeable that change feels in practice. If anyone has moved from something around 1800R to 800R, I’d love to hear how it felt after adjusting. Personally, something around 1000R–1500R seems more reasonable to me, which is one reason I’m slightly leaning toward the Alienware, but the glossy coating is giving me some hesitation.
Would love to hear thoughts from people who’ve used either monitor, especially regarding glossy vs matte on OLED and living with an 800R curve.
Thanks!
