17M International Student Moving to VUW for BE(Hons) Software Engineering
Kia ora!
I'm a 17-year-old guy heading to New Zealand from overseas to start my Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Software Engineering at Victoria University of Wellington (Te Herenga Waka). Super excited but also pretty nervous as this is a big move. I wanted to post here to get real insights from current/past students on the VUW community and life in Wellington.
Here are my main doubts, I'd love your honest takes in the comments:
- Things to keep in mind or prepare beforehand? What should I sort out before leaving (documents, packing, finances, etc.)? Any culture shocks or practical tips for a young international student?
- First things I should do when I get there? Orientation, accommodation, settling in what's the priority list for the first week or two?
- Looking for part-time jobs – I want to work to help with costs. Is it realistic? What's the job market like for students in Wellington (hospitality, retail, campus roles, tech related)? Best places to search and any tips for CVs/interviews?
- Is it worth it? From your experience, is VUW strong for Software Engineering? Good lecturers, industry connections, hands-on projects? Would you recommend it overall?
- How's life there? Student community vibe, social scene, cost of living, weather, making friends as an international, work-life balance, etc. Pros/cons of Wellington for a first-year engineering student?
Any advice from engineering students especially would be amazing. Thanks in advance, stoked to join the VUW whānau!
