Why did Jesus need to be sacrificed in order for our sins to be forgiven?

Why are there people that have him a close confidant while hes silent to the people that need him most?

I cant remember any camp encounters or missions where they do. It would be a pretty interesting dynamic ( you know being a brit and an irishman at this point in history ).
