Tank won't seal with fluidmaster complete kit

Kohler toilet. I had a tower-type mechanism where the tiny little plastic retainer at the bottom broke off (surprise). Bought a Fluidmaster complete kit at Lowe's, but even after five attempts I'm not able to get a watertight seal between the tank and the toilet. Also, I'm not sure it's a Kohler tank. The instructions that came with the Fluidmaster provided a gasket with three rubber plugs to fit into recesses in the bottom of a Kohler tank. But not only does my tank not have those three recesses, the bolts attach to a (aftermarket?) metal plate that's kept in place by the flange nut. I cant find any markings at all on the tank to indicate a brand, model number -- anything. Do I need a new tank? And if so, I saw another post here that said I need to use Kohler hardware? TIA
