If you could pick to see one historical match you were not able to watch live, what would it be?
Here are a few humble nominations:
1980 Wimbledon men’s final: Borg d. McEnroe 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (16), 8-6
This one needs no explanation, probably the most iconic match in the history of the sport until 2008, with what is still the greatest tiebreak ever played. Defining of an era with two legends whose personas and rivalry transcended the game.
1996 ATP Finals final: Sampras d. Becker 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (13), 6-4
This is a match that every tennis fan should know but I rarely see discussed; if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend watching the Extended Highlights on YouTube. An absolute slugfest that lasted exactly 4 hours and consisted of just absurdly exquisite, aggressive shotmaking throughout. Arguably the peak of men’s tennis in the ‘90s and Becker’s last epic!
1926 Carlton Club women’s final: Lenglen d. Wills 6-3, 8-6
The Match of the Century, no match in tennis history has ever been more highly anticipated than this one and it has attained a near-mythical status. Lenglen guts it out in the end (because Suzanne always won), but not before supreme drama, including a false “out” call on one of Lenglen’s match points that severely rattled her.
EDIT: fixed scoreline typo
After Sunday’s race, there are now 3 active drivers who have won in 3 different car numbers in their career; can you name all 3?
Of course, SVG is the newest addition to this list, having won on his debut in the #91, taking 5 victories last year in the #88, and now bringing the #97 back to victory lane.
The other two to do it? Kyle Busch got his first 4 wins in the #5 during his Hendrick seasons, racked up 56 wins during his lengthy tenure in the #18, and has so far added 3 more in the #8. Meanwhile, Brad Keselowski scored 34 of his 36 career victories in the #2, but he’s visited Victory Lane once each in the #6 (his lone win so far at RFK) and in the #09 (his first win at the famous Dega finish where Carl flew into the fence).
There are a handful of other active drivers who have won in 2 different numbers (Logano, Larson, Blaney, Reddick, Bowman, Buescher, Briscoe, Stenhouse, Jones, and Wallace), but all of them are currently driving numbers they’ve already won in, so we may have to wait a bit for the next addition to this list.
The album is titled The Friendly Moss Forest Creatures Lived Happily In Perpetual Twilight and was released last summer.
I just recently stumbled across these guys and was instantly hooked, at first I was worried their sound would be too derivative of Gizz but they have a lot of interesting ideas and experiments of their own. Very reminiscent of Poly-era in particular in its proggy folk-adjacent medieval riffing, very whimsical and ethereal yet also eerie and with enough of an edge to keep you guessing.
Can’t believe the band only has 3,200 monthly listeners, they deserve to blow up!
