Bedroom has 3 dead outlets; breaker isn’t tripped. How should I isolate the failed connection?
I made a diagram (see image) and tried to give as much info as possible. Any questions just let me know and I'm happy to reply!
Here's the problem:
Outlets #1 and #2 in the photo work perfectly. Outlets #3, #4, #5, & #6 all randomly stopped working and plugged in devices all shut off.
This was right as I was heading to bed, there was some lightning/thunder nearby and I could feel some vibrations, but other than that maybe being related, I really can't think of anything that would've caused this.
I used a plug-in receptacle tester and outlets #1 & #2 showed "correctly wiring". The other 4 outlets also show correct wiring, BUT if you plug one thing into any of them (I used a bedside lamp) and then use the receptacle tester, all of the 4 outlets in question will show "Hot & Gnd Rev". Some of these outlets (#4, #5) I have not even touched the wiring on yet, so that reading isn't quite making sense to me. I'm hoping that gives a hint as to what is going on and that someone here is able to help.
Things I've tried:
- Flipping the breaker for the room off and back on again.
- Using a plugin receptacle tester (results listed above)
- Swapping outlet #3 for a new one
- Swapping outlet #6 for a new one
- Pressing test & reset on all GFCIs on the entire property (checked power on each to ensure shutoff and checking that power came back on for each)
Extra notes: This house was built roughly around the year 2000, plus or minus a couple years (probably minus a couple of years if anything). House is located in South Carolina, and is a two story suburban house.
ANY and ALL help is greatly appreciated! Any questions just let me know. I'm eager to learn and get this problem taken care of. Thank you!
