Maybe its because i played classic wow then ff14 that I have this opinion, but still I wonder if theres more mmos likely classic wow.
Why classic wow worked. For starters, non existence linear route. You played wow classic how you wanted to play it. I genuinely loved how there wasn't a story mode and it was quests that you could do in the world. The leveling experience was what I made of it. There was a sense of pride that I knew both continents best quests to do because I explored the whole world. Where in ff14 im just mindlessly going from one story quest to the next rushing through it all.
In classic wow, everything mattered to a point. And I loved the stronge influence that the in game market had on it.
I loved that the gear I got actually mattered to me. I genuinely grinded for particular gear in dungeons because they were my bis at the time. As I was a warrior gear was everything to me. And micro managing my stats to exactly how I wanted them made me genuinely care about my gear.
In ff14 I havent looked my stats or gear once. I never felt like I had to. Everything is handed to you.
Also I understand the criticism of classic wow on how it's harder and far easier to get lost in and the easier and more linear leveling experience is more prefered for wide audience. But man, im genuinely just thinking the whole time. Why am I doing this, why cant I just skip this?
The only mmo that tried to mimic this design was new world, but they really messed it up. From my understanding.

Dont get me wrong, wow classic wasnt perfect. I really enough threat control, that was fun. But the combat visually is outdated and could use a more modern flair to it. But I personally loved that I was genuinely weak for the first chunk of the game and I had to depend on the community to play the game.
Most modern mmos feel like solo player games surrounded by other players. You had acknowledge other players in wow and I loved that.
