Just to show how writing with AI had evolved, Jody Foster made the following claims about the Oscar winning F1 movie:

“The actors say the lines exactly the way it would be written if a computer was writing exactly what would be the right thing for that time,” the Hollywood veteran adds.

She doesn't mind it.

I bring this up because technology transforms the tools with which art is made. I want to be cautious here because I don't want to sound as if this one single theory this actress had is validation enough, but we are in a transformative era.

New lurker here. Let me just say that I am a huge proponent of AI-assisted drafting. Not because it is better than human writing (we're ways off) but I can write stories I want to read faster. Bit of a long post, this one. I think I have finally settled down on a process. At least I hope so.

Anyways, looking for some feedback from you have have relied on AI writing prose. I've been toying with ChatGPT trying to get it to write well enough so as not sounds whack. I'm a huge fan of architecting a story properly. Would love a second opinion on my first chapter of my in-progress scifi novella: Betrayal at Calderion. I'll probably put it on GitHub or somewhere public if anyone is interested in reading the story as I draft the remaining chapters. Story premise at the bottom of this post.

>Chapter 1 — The Shield Does Not Fit the Stone

>The socket slipped again.

>Kalliaris lost skin across two knuckles and bit down before the curse got loud enough for the comm pickup. The induction collar shifted under her left hand, not far, but far enough for the emitter throat above her to answer with a hard metallic hum.

>The stone around the crawlspace trembled.

>Dust fell into her face seal. Some of it found the sweat at her mouth. She tasted grit and old insulation.

>“Hold it,” she said.

>“I am holding it,” Rellan said from beneath the assembly.

>“You’re leaning near it.”

>“I’m leaning on it.”

>“Then lean meaner.”

>He made a small, offended sound and shoved his shoulder up under the collar. The part stopped moving. Mostly.

>Kalliaris worked her numb right leg against the brace, trying to get blood back into it. The crawlspace had been cut for someone thinner, younger, and less likely to object. Old warning paint had rubbed flat where generations of gloves had reached for the same bolts. A coolant hose kinked against her hip and spat mist over the brace every three seconds.

>The official gallery board, visible through the service gap beyond Rellan’s shoulder, glowed green.

>Everything about the metal under her hands disagreed.

>“Local,” she said.

>Rellan thumped the hand display strapped to his wrist. It blinked dead, came back, blinked again.

>“Helpful,” he muttered.

>“Battery.”

>He tilted the pack with his thumb. “Local says one-oh-seven.”

>“Again.”

>“One-oh—wait. One-eighteen.”

>“Good. It learned honesty.”

>“The board says safe.”

>“The board is in a clean room.”

>“The board is right above us.”

>“And yet somehow still not here.” She spat grit against the inside of her cheek and reset the socket on the rounded bolt head. “Brace.”

>“I’m braced.”

>“If it moves again, let it take the wrench, not your fingers.”

>“That’s comforting.”

>“It wasn’t meant to be.”

>She pulled.

>The socket held for half a breath, then jumped. Her hand slammed into the collar lip. Heat came through the glove like teeth.

>Rellan flinched. The collar dipped.

>“Don’t move.”

>“Your glove—”

>“Don’t move.”

>A pale line had burned through the left glove between thumb and forefinger. Not all the way through. Enough. Sweat ran into the hot place and made her hand try to become someone else’s.

>The comm bead clicked in her ear.

>“Council systems desk,” said a calm voice. “Chief Engineer Kalliaris, you are still on maintenance override. Production review has not authorized any defensive reroute.”

>“I didn’t ask for defensive. I asked for deep load.”

>“Corridor traffic is active.”

>“I’m inside chain four with a wrong-grade collar and a local heat rise your board isn’t showing.”

>“The board indicates safe tolerance.”

>Kalliaris stared at the green light beyond Rellan’s shoulder. “Of course it does.”

>“Pardon?”

>“Nothing useful. Open reroute four through seven.”

>“Your advisory authority does not include corridor interruption.”

>The emitter shuddered again. Not a clean vibration. A lopsided one, like a bad tooth struck from underneath.

>Rellan’s display chirped late.

>He looked at it. Looked at her. “One twenty-six.”

>The clerk continued, “If this is a maintenance disagreement, it belongs in the post-cycle review.”

>Kalliaris hooked two fingers through her tool strap and dragged the cracked screwdriver out. The strap caught on a brace behind her. She jerked once. It held. She jerked harder and the buckle snapped against her ribs.

>“Rellan. Under the lip.”

>“That’s not a wedge.”

>“It is today.”

>“That’s a screwdriver.”

>“I know what it used to be.”

>He jammed it where she pointed. She pressed down. The screwdriver flexed. The collar lifted a finger-width, misaligned, angry, still refusing the groove.

>Her leg cramped from hip to ankle.

>“Again,” she said.

>“I don’t have another shoulder.”

>“Use the first one better.”

>He did. The screwdriver bit. Kalliaris put the socket back onto the swollen bolt, wrapped her burned hand over the wrench head to keep it seated, and pulled with her whole body.

>For one second nothing happened.

>Then the bolt turned.

>A quarter. Another. Metal squealed against metal. The collar slammed into place with a sound that was not fit, but close enough to pass for obedience.

>The local alarm stuttered and died.

>Rellan breathed out hard. “Local dropping. One nineteen. One fourteen. One twelve.”

>“Not fixed.”

>“No?”

>“No.”

>“How can you tell?”

>She took her burned hand off the collar. The left side cooled. The right side still bled heat into the brace.

>“If it were seated, that side would be cold.”

>“It says cold.”

>“Touch it.”

>He hesitated.

>She looked at him.

>“I’d rather not,” he said.

>“Exactly.”

>The comm bead clicked again. “Chief Engineer, do you wish to withdraw the reroute request?”

>“I wish to file an emergency flag.”

>There was a pause. Safe-room pause. Paperwork pause.

>“That will trigger command notification.”

>“Yes.”

>“And council review.”

>“Yes.”

>“And may delay production clearance for the next convoy sequence.”

>The service hatch beside the official board gave a tired clunk and opened three fingers wide. No farther.

>Kalliaris shoved herself backward. Her shoulder caught against the brace. The snapped strap caught again. For a moment she was pinned half out of the crawlspace with one numb leg, one burned hand, and coolant mist dripping off her chin seal.

>“Chief Engineer?”

>“Flag it.”

>“The stated cause?”

>She got her fingers under the hatch lip and put her weight into it. The latch resisted, then gave with a rusty pop. Behind it, the dead auxiliary diagnostic panel sat under a strip of tape marked by hand: DO NOT TRUST CLEAN BOARD.

>Someone local, then. Someone had known.

>The screen flickered once. Black. Then gray.

>Fragments crawled up in broken lines.

>EAST SEAM LOAD: 143%

>MANUAL MASK ACTIVE

>COUNCIL LOCK

>Rellan stopped breathing loudly enough that she noticed.

>The official board beside it remained green.

>“Chief Engineer,” the clerk said, smaller now, “please repeat stated cause.”

>Kalliaris pressed her burned glove against the panel casing to steady herself. Blood warmed inside the glove.

>“False reporting,” she said. “Hidden overload. Eastern seam.”

>“That channel is restricted.”

>“No,” Kalliaris said. “It’s broken.”

>She keyed the flag herself.

>For a second the auxiliary panel showed the flag confirmation.

>Then dust shook loose from the stone overhead.

>The screen blinked black, woke again, and painted a small, pale bloom at the edge of slipspace detection.

Premise:

Betrayal at Calderion

When the Astradian Imperium’s armada appears at the mouth of the last fuel corridor, Calderion-Prime—an aging, hollowed asteroid colony that guards the Inner Worlds—must survive seven days of calculated attrition.
