Is it realistic to pivot from JPM back office + part-time MBA into Investment Banking?
I’m looking for honest advice from people in IB or anyone who has successfully made a nontraditional pivot.
I currently work at JPMorgan in a back office role and have about 2.5 years of experience. I recently finished my MBA part time with a concentration in finance while working full time.
Through my MBA I’ve taken courses like derivatives, portfolio theory, international financial markets, etc., and I’ve realized I’m much more interested in front office finance and investment banking than the path I’m currently on.
The issue is that I know investment banking recruiting is very structured, and I didn’t come from the traditional target school/summer analyst pipeline. I also know audit is very different from IB, so I’m trying to figure out how realistic this pivot actually is.
I’m willing to network aggressively, study technicals, and potentially even take a step back title-wise if needed. I’ve already started learning valuation/modeling on my own and reaching out to bankers.
My questions are:
Is this pivot realistically possible from a JPM back office role + part time MBA?
Would I have a better chance targeting boutique/middle market banks first?
Should I focus on analyst roles even with MBA-level education?
What skills or experiences would make me more competitive?
If you were in my position, what would your strategy be over the next 12 months?
I’d appreciate honest feedback, even if it’s blunt. I’m trying to figure out whether this is a realistic path or if I should redirect my energy elsewhere.
