What's a budget friendly and reliable car that I can buy my parents?

I'm looking for some help finding a reliable but budget friendly vehicle that I can buy for my parents. My parents have helped a ton of people in their lifetime, and have unfortunately fallen on some hard times recently with health, and finances.

Right now they are getting around in my old 2 door 2010 GTI. But I don't know how long that's going to last them. I'm getting new tires and the brakes done on this car soon for safety reasons and I really don't want to keep spending money on this car.

My dad is 6'1 and is pretty uncomfortable in this car.

My budget is nothing more than 20K, with a 790 credit score, I could put $5k down but not really much else. Ideally I would want the payments below $300 a month, but I feel like that's a long shot and the current economy and for what I might be looking for. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I typically buy my cars from CarMax with max care, if that's relevant to this question/post.
