Implant failed during the abutment placing, Tooth #7.
I'm incredibly distraught after what happened yesterday. I Want to preface this by saying, I don't smoke, I only drink on occasions, and I take excellent care of my oral hygeine. I'm a 27 year old woman, and in good health. I received dental implants for teeth #7 and 10 in early April. I saw many surgeons/Prosthedontist leading up to the one I chose since he came highly recommended by my dentist. All three surgeons/Prosthedontist told me I didn't need a bone graft. Fast forward to the beginning of April and the Dental implant procedure goes very well. All is looking well at my followup, things are healing great, and my CT Scan taken at the end of May goes very well. My Prosthedontist says everything looks great in my CT Scan, my bone had formed really well around both implants and I'm ready for the abutments. I come back in yesterday (2 days shy of 3 months) for the abutment procedure. He seems incredibly confident, walks me through the procedure, numbs me up and we get started on tooth #7. I keep hearing him say "Good, everything's going really well." Then he takes a deep sigh and says "Welp. There goes your implant. It fell out. Its right on the table." Then he says "See, this is why we should have waited 4 months."
At this point I'm in total shock and disbelief. I asked "What do you mean it just fell out! You asked me to come back today, you never said anything about waiting 4 months!" I gladly would have waited 4 months if I was told my success rate would increase... We take X-rays and CT Scans, everything looks fine. No bone loss, no infection. He even stated that the implant for tooth 10 still looks great, and still looks ready for an abutment, but I refused to have him touch implant 10 after implant 7 had just "fell out"...
He replaced implant 7 same day. He said my bones still have the grooves from the first implant, and everything looked healthy enough to replace it same day. I Was given dental multi-vitamins to take over the next 6 weeks. I guess he's hoping this will increase my chance for success? I'm honestly devastated. I have no idea how this could have happened. I've been taking Vitamin D3+K2 everyday for the 4 months under his instruction. I'm in shock that there was really no way to test the stability of the implant before he ripped it out of my mouth. I asked several time if there was really no way for him to check the stabilty of the implant before he did the procedure, and he told me "While rare, these things just happen". I can't believe I have to start all over again... he wants me to wait 5 months for the new implant for tooth 7, I honestly don't know if thats enough. I Wonder if I should play it safe and wait 6 months... Now I'm also unsure when it's safe to touch Impalnt #10... he tried to get me to come back next month for the abutment, but I don't feel confident that another month will be enough time. I'm thinking of waiting either 5 or 6 months...
I could really use some advice on what to do now. Was there really no way of testing the stability of my implant before the abutment procedure? Do implants placed same-day have more difficulty healing? He seemed to believe it would heal faster this time around... How long should I give implant 10 before attempting the abutment? I'm terrified of going back at 5 months and it fall out too. I can't handle having start over again.... I'm going to schedule some bloodwork to see if I have any mineral deficiencies, but I'm not really sure what else to do. I haven't been treated great at this clinic, but I had to pay all the money up front. I feel stuck now. This place came highly reviewed and highly recommend. I'm in complete shock.
