Ok, what the heck is everyone eating?

Hey everyone. I had all on 6 surgery one week ago today. Since then I have also managed to lose 7 pounds. I’ve been pretty much living off of 2 Huel meal replacement shakes a day and then soup and maybe a little ice cream. It seems basically impossible to get 1200 calories a day and I’m absolutely starving. Two days ago I tried to have oats overnight but it got all stuck in my stitches and it’s hard to tell what’s my healing gums and what’s food. This paired with not being able to properly brush or use a water pick yet makes me nervous to try anything more solid until these stitches dissolve. When did you guys start introducing soft solids?

[70F] Dentist is recommending 10 Root Canals and fixed bridges in 10 days for my grandmother.

Patient Info: 70-year-old Female. Non-smoker, does not drink.

Primary Complaint: We originally went to the clinic because my grandmother had severe, acute pain in two of her lower left teeth.

The Background:

The dentist took a localized X-ray, found deep decay, and successfully performed root canals and placed crowns on those two teeth. We waited a little over two weeks for her to heal, and I'm happy to report she is feeling great and is totally pain-free on that side!

The Dilemma:

During the follow-up, the dentist took a full OPG (panoramic X-ray) and noted she is missing teeth on the opposite side (lower right) and upper jaw. To replace these missing teeth and balance her bite, the dentist is recommending a "Full Mouth Rehabilitation" using fixed bridges.

Because the teeth next to these empty gaps are tilted or worn, the dentist says they need to be shaved down to act as anchors for the bridges. To prevent the nerves from dying after being shaved, she has proposed prophylactic (preventative) root canals on all the anchor teeth.

Here is the catch: The handwritten treatment plan lists 10 additional teeth that need root canals. This brings the total to 12 root canals. Even more concerning to me, the dentist wants to complete these 10 new root canals in multiple sittings over the next 10 days.

My Concerns/Questions for the professionals here:

The Physical Toll: Subjecting a 70-year-old woman to 10 root canals in 10 days seems incredibly aggressive and exhausting. I am very worried about jaw strain, TMJ flare-ups, and the overall physical trauma of keeping her mouth open for that long. Is this timeline standard or safe for geriatric patients?

I just want the minimum necessary fix to help my grandma chew comfortably, without putting her through a massive physical ordeal and a huge financial burden. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Need opinions on complex dental reconstruction and bone grafting decision

Hello everyone, I’m currently facing a very difficult decision and I’m hoping that someone here may have had similar experiences or can share their opinion. I have been in orthodontic treatment for over 10 years. Unfortunately, the results were only partially successful. I still have fairly misaligned teeth and a crossbite. In addition, I had an impacted supernumerary tooth (tooth 15) that went unnoticed for many years. Because of this, there is now almost no bone left in that area, and the adjacent teeth (14 and 16) have already been affected. I only found out about this tooth quite late. The X-rays were never properly explained to me at the time. My orthodontist once simply told me I had a “replacement tooth” there in case a lower tooth would be lost. Apart from my dissatisfaction with my current tooth alignment, I now have a much bigger problem: the bone loss is progressing, and there is a cyst-like lesion with recurring inflammation. I would generally like to undergo orthodontic treatment again, as I feel the remaining teeth should still be properly aligned. I have already consulted several orthodontists. However, they all say that while the other teeth could be straightened, the area around tooth 15 cannot be treated orthodontically in a meaningful way due to the severe bone defect. I still have all four wisdom teeth. The surgeon who extracted teeth for me in September last year intentionally left them as possible “reserve teeth.” There was even discussion about transplanting a wisdom tooth into the affected area. However, this seems very difficult due to the lack of bone. On the current CBCT (DVT), the bone defect looks just as severe, if not worse, than immediately after the extraction. I have now been offered the following treatment plan: * Removal of the affected upper teeth from the 16 region * Treatment of the inflammation * Bone grafting using bone from the iliac crest (hip bone) * Soft tissue and gum reconstruction (including palatal tissue) * A temporary prosthesis during the healing phase * Placement of implants once everything has fully healed and stabilized I am only 20 years old, and I am honestly very unsure. On one hand, I would still prefer to correct my teeth orthodontically, but on the other hand, all doctors I have seen advise against it and recommend implant-based rehabilitation as the most realistic solution. I also need to pay for the entire treatment myself, as neither the insurance nor orthodontic care for this situation is covered once you are over 18. I was also told that I need to decide within the next six months. Otherwise, there is a risk that the neighbouring teeth will continue to drift into the defect, which could worsen the situation further. I am attaching my current X-ray and the cost estimate. I would really appreciate any experiences or opinions, especially from people who have dealt with similar bone loss, iliac crest bone grafts, or implants at a young age. Thank you very much in advance for any advice.

Learning to chew with full mouth permanent dental implants

Hi. I’m 3 months after getting my full top and bottom 4 on 1 dental implants and I am having a very difficult time chewing. Is this normal? It’s very awkward and my gums feel swollen or like the implants are “pushing “ my mouth outwards? The most challenging part is not being able to chew after more than 3 months of having my permanent implants. Could be because it’s my entire mouth? I’m basically still on a soft food diet of soup, sorbet, mashed potatoes and some chicken if I slow cook it so it’s nearly disintegrating. Do I need to wait for another 3 months for the full fusion? I’m seriously worried that I will forget how to chew 😞

Full arch implants

I just had a full arch uppers implants I had the bottoms done a week ago. I'm not a smoker and enjoy a drink or 2 especially in the summer. The discharge instructions said no drinking. Would an occasional drink be that harmful? Would a cannabis drink be better?

Is this dry socket or normal healing?

This was so hard to get a picture of but I can try again if needed. I still have a lot of swelling which kind of worries me.

I had tooth extracted on Tuesday 6/30 at 3pm. This is 2.5 days after extraction. I’m worried that I this is a dry socket that is maybe filled with debris and is why I can’t fully tell. The swelling is still pretty prominent and noticeable where the dentist injected me with numbing. You can see the swollen bubble at the back of the tooth extraction hole on my gum line.

I just woke up from a little bit of throbbing but I wasn’t laying in an upright position, I fell asleep almost entirely laying flat. I did a saltwater rinse and brushed my teeth again and plan to take ibuprofen and go back to sleep elevated. I’m really hoping when I wake up in a few hours I see more signs of healing.

Not being able eat with clients is going to have a bad effect on my career

I'm in sales. We see customers for lunch and social events all the time. Thankfully I'm not constantly hunting for new business and I work with a lot of the same reps over and over, but I'm rocking an Essix a week after extraction. Fucking thing sucks. It's not even a discreet gap either, it's my two front teeth. You can't hide that. I look like a crackhead with it taken out lol.

But there's really no good and also fast option here. I had a failed bridge that turned into an abscess - root canal from 15 years ago. Going with another bridge across my two front teeth would likely not function well and I'd be destroying another healthy tooth. It was implants or dealing with this for the rest of my life.

Has anyone actually blown through multiple Essix retainers from eating with them in? Are there certain foods/procedures you can do to minimize damages? I had to get a bone graft so I know a flipper isn't an option for now, but in a few months if it heals I might switch to that if it's easier to eat on them. That way if it ever breaks I have the Essix as a backup. This just isn't practical in my day to day life. I'm keeping it as clean as possible and salt water rinsing every night before bed.

What veneer color shade?

I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find a sub in veneers, but I have my temporary veneers on, and I chose a color, but was curious what others chose for their colors and if they are happy or regret it.

Sorry if not allowed here. I can’t find a veneer sub

For people who've had dental implants for 5+ years, how are they holding up today?

Most posts focus on the surgery itself, but I'm curious about the long-term experience. Has your implant needed any maintenance or repairs? Do you still feel like it was worth the investment? I'd love to hear both positive and negative experiences.

Paid ₹72,000 for "fully ceramic" crowns at a Trivandrum clinic in 2019. Just found out 7 years later they installed cheap metal-ceramic crowns + acrylic material that blackened.

Long post, but please read if you're in Trivandrum and are considering dental work anywhere. This could save you a lot of money and suffering.

Background

In early 2019, I was in a two-wheeler accident and lost 5 teeth. Painful experience physically and emotionally. I went to City Dental Clinic in Pallimukku, Trivandrum, to get them restored. The dentist there specifically recommended fully ceramic crowns — described them as the premium option, best quality, most natural-looking. He quoted ₹72,000 for all five and also promised a 15-year warranty on all of them. I paid in full. I was already stressed from the accident, he was a professional, I trusted him completely.

Within months, something was wrong

A few months after the procedure, two of the lower crowns turned visibly black. Not slightly discoloured — properly dark and blackened. I went back and he acknowledged it and said he'd replace them. I had to relocate to Chennai for a job around that time, kept delaying going back, assuming the 15-year warranty meant it would be sorted whenever I returned. That was my mistake. I should have pushed harder.

June 2026 — the truth comes out

I visited a different clinic recently for something unrelated and asked them to take a look at the crowns. What they told me was genuinely shocking:

  • The 3 upper crowns were NOT fully ceramic — they were MLS crowns (metal-ceramic), which are significantly cheaper and of lower quality
  • The 2 lower crowns were made from temporary dental material — literally the stuff meant to last only a few weeks. This is exactly why they went black — temporary materials degrade fast inside the mouth
  • Here's the part that infuriated me: fully ceramic crowns were widely available in India in 2019. This wasn't some new technology. Any reputed dental supplier in Kerala was stocking them back then

So I paid a premium price for something, and received a completely different, inferior product — without any disclosure whatsoever.

June 21 — I went back to the clinic

I went back with the second opinion report, wanting an explanation and replacement of all 5 crowns. What I got was the dentist shouting at me. His exact positions were:

  • "The warranty is the lab's responsibility, not mine" (despite having personally promised it to me)
  • "There was only warranty for 3 of the 5 crowns" (completely different from the original promise)
  • "Fully ceramic crowns weren't available in 2019" — an outright lie that any dental professional or supply company can disprove

He refused to offer any refund, replacement, or acknowledgement. Just denial and aggression.

What I'm doing about it

  • Consumer Court (DCDRC, Trivandrum) — filed, seeking ₹3,76,800 in compensation
  • Kerala Dental Council — complaint filed for professional misconduct and use of substandard materials
  • Police complaint — under BNS 2023 Sec. 318(4) for cheating and criminal breach of trust

Why I'm posting this

1. Warning to everyone: Before any expensive dental procedure, ask for written confirmation of the exact material being used — brand name, grade, type. Don't just accept "ceramic" or "zirconia" verbally. Insist on it being on the receipt or prescription.

2. If you've been through something similar at this clinic or any other in Trivandrum — please reach out or comment. I have reason to believe I'm not the only one. Multiple affected patients can file a collective complaint at consumer court, which carries far more weight.

3. Legal advice from Kerala folks welcome — anyone who's gone through the consumer court process here? How long did it take, what evidence made the biggest difference?

Husbands implant failed after crown placement

Hi there!

Posting this for maybe some advice or insight on why my husbands implant failed after crown placement. He just had his final crown put on 3 weeks ago today and felt like the implant was wiggly while on vacation last week. After going back to the oral surgeon today, it's been confirmed that there is infection, the post is loose and will need to be placed again & possibly more bone grafting done. He has no underlying health conditions that would inhibit healing and also has a very good dental hygiene routine so I think we are both shocked.

I'm kind of at a loss for words because shouldn't the osseointegration be confirmed before going through with the final crown? I'd also like to add that he did feel like the crown could have been overtightened by the dentist but this can't be confirmed or proven so kind of at a loss there as well. He said that he could have leapt out of the chair, thats how much pressure he felt. Could an improperly installed crown cause a loose post? He's had no issues with the post up until the final crown went on. What should we do moving forward? Second opinon? Find a new dentist for the crown? Are the chances of failure higher a second time?

Any advice helps! Trying to make him feel better about the situation but it's hard when you wait 6+ months to have your final crown just to find out that you may be looking at another 3-6 months after failure.

Implant failed during the abutment placing, Tooth #7.

I'm incredibly distraught after what happened yesterday. I Want to preface this by saying, I don't smoke, I only drink on occasions, and I take excellent care of my oral hygeine. I'm a 27 year old woman, and in good health. I received dental implants for teeth #7 and 10 in early April. I saw many surgeons/Prosthedontist leading up to the one I chose since he came highly recommended by my dentist. All three surgeons/Prosthedontist told me I didn't need a bone graft. Fast forward to the beginning of April and the Dental implant procedure goes very well. All is looking well at my followup, things are healing great, and my CT Scan taken at the end of May goes very well. My Prosthedontist says everything looks great in my CT Scan, my bone had formed really well around both implants and I'm ready for the abutments. I come back in yesterday (2 days shy of 3 months) for the abutment procedure. He seems incredibly confident, walks me through the procedure, numbs me up and we get started on tooth #7. I keep hearing him say "Good, everything's going really well." Then he takes a deep sigh and says "Welp. There goes your implant. It fell out. Its right on the table." Then he says "See, this is why we should have waited 4 months."

At this point I'm in total shock and disbelief. I asked "What do you mean it just fell out! You asked me to come back today, you never said anything about waiting 4 months!" I gladly would have waited 4 months if I was told my success rate would increase... We take X-rays and CT Scans, everything looks fine. No bone loss, no infection. He even stated that the implant for tooth 10 still looks great, and still looks ready for an abutment, but I refused to have him touch implant 10 after implant 7 had just "fell out"...

He replaced implant 7 same day. He said my bones still have the grooves from the first implant, and everything looked healthy enough to replace it same day. I Was given dental multi-vitamins to take over the next 6 weeks. I guess he's hoping this will increase my chance for success? I'm honestly devastated. I have no idea how this could have happened. I've been taking Vitamin D3+K2 everyday for the 4 months under his instruction. I'm in shock that there was really no way to test the stability of the implant before he ripped it out of my mouth. I asked several time if there was really no way for him to check the stabilty of the implant before he did the procedure, and he told me "While rare, these things just happen". I can't believe I have to start all over again... he wants me to wait 5 months for the new implant for tooth 7, I honestly don't know if thats enough. I Wonder if I should play it safe and wait 6 months... Now I'm also unsure when it's safe to touch Impalnt #10... he tried to get me to come back next month for the abutment, but I don't feel confident that another month will be enough time. I'm thinking of waiting either 5 or 6 months...

I could really use some advice on what to do now. Was there really no way of testing the stability of my implant before the abutment procedure? Do implants placed same-day have more difficulty healing? He seemed to believe it would heal faster this time around... How long should I give implant 10 before attempting the abutment? I'm terrified of going back at 5 months and it fall out too. I can't handle having start over again.... I'm going to schedule some bloodwork to see if I have any mineral deficiencies, but I'm not really sure what else to do. I haven't been treated great at this clinic, but I had to pay all the money up front. I feel stuck now. This place came highly reviewed and highly recommend. I'm in complete shock.

Anyone have experience with dental implants here

I had an implant to replace a traumatized front tooth about 4 years ago..now I’ve been told I need three more..can I use cannabis during the time the implant heals? There’s no bone graft involved this time..an extraction and placket of screws and three teeth..I’m 75 ..been using cannabis as a sin reliever and relaxer for 40 years ..thought I’d stopping seems very overwhelming now..but if anyone has scientific info….please share it..I know nicotine slows dental healing but in cannabis there’s no nicotine..thank you..

Advice pls. I was told not to get all on 4 dental implants

Howdy. I had a consult with a dentist today that does implants. He told me he does everything except braces pretty much. He told me I shouldn't get all on 4 pretty much because I'm still younger"40". I am missing 4 molars, and I only chewed on one side of my mouth for years so my bite and jaw are pretty jacked. His advice was to get 4 implants for the missing teeth and braces. The first time I ever saw a dentist was in my early 30s. I don't have any cavities currently, I did have gingivitis most of my life. My teeth are crowded, but the overall shape of my sunken face bothers my more than anything. With my gum recession and bone loss, idk if I'd be happy even with my teeth straightened and implants where the missing ones are. I took an X-ray today but I am going back for more scans later this week. Will full dental implants fix my sunken face? Should I push for implants still? Thank you for any advice
