UPDATED - Faction 2000pt cost in USD (June 2026)
After receiving some good feedback, I've update this chart.
The previous post reflected character models and units equally but I have multiplied the Heroes' points per dollar value by .33 to account for them being something that is only purchased once.
Note: I did not do this for Sons of Behemat due to their unique point costs.
The Math
- I charted out the points of every miniature across all factions
- I divided the point cost by the MSRP to get the "Points per dollar" number
- Then, I divided 2000pts by the Points per dollar number to get an estimate of what an army would cost.
The dollar amount is calculated by taking 2000 pts and dividing it by the points per dollar spent figure.
Ex: Sylvaneth = 2000 / 1.82 = $1.098.90
This chart is assuming you are buying everything at GW MSRP and not 2nd hand, via spearhead or an End of Year Army Bargain Box. There are obviously cheaper ways to get armies.
Hopefully this is more accurate, as much as it hurts my soul and wallet.
AOS Army Points per $ spent (June 2026)
Edit: Dollar amounts are in USD
I made this for my local group to outline which armies are cheaper for new players to buy into and to outline what their expected investment will be if they started playing.
Note: This does not include anything that is slated to be moved to Legends in 2027.
The Math behind these numbers:
- I created an excel for every faction and listed out their miniature range
- I divided the Point cost by the price to get the Points Per Dollar figure (PPD)
- Basically, if you spend 1 dollar, how many points will you get from the faction on average
- Example: Infernal Cohort w/Spears are 90 pts and cost 55.5 GW MSRP
- 90pts/$55 = 1.62 points per dollar
- I repeated this across the entire product line for every faction to get every units PPD and added them all together. I divided that figure by the number of units in the army to get the Faction Points Per Dollar in the image above
- Finally, I took the 2000pt limit and divided it by the PPD figure to get a rough estimate of how much you should expect to spend on a chosen faction.
Note: I did not factor in End of Year Army Boxes, Spearheads, or boxes like Regiments of renown. I wanted a blanket number that represented how Games Workshop is pricing the army over all. There are obviously way cheaper methods of getting an army than outright buying everything new at GW MSRP.
Hope this helps your local group!
