The Couples of Gundam #24 - Marbet & Oliver

Geez, going by the downvotes on some of my comments I guess I really touched a nerve for some people yesterday (again 😅)

But as I keep saying, I'm happy if you like things I don't, in almost all cases. And Mora and Keith clearly are beloved, though maybe just because they look good compared to the other love story in that show? No matter why, they scored a very solid...

9.36!

Someone brought them up and I know I'll forget them if I don't do it now... But since I'm not going to rewatch Victory just for them I have to admit I remember like nothing about them 🫣 and I only found one picture? I mean, it's pretty fun but... Tell me how much you love them!

Stephen Colbert has excellent taste in movies

I think he's spoken very positively about the Thing on occasion before, but I was reminded when he got asked his usual set of questions, because his show is cancelled as a farewell event. The question was about his favourite action movie but he prefaced it with his favourite movie independent of genre.

The Couples of Gundam #23 - Mora & Keith

Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised at last time. But we got at least one huge fan coming out of the woodwork? Also, I don't quite get the "Nina and Kou had zero chemistry" argument. I mean, it's obviously subjective and I'm neither the best judge nor saying they're the best couple, but I felt they fit well enough before the plot went downhill. Eh, each to their own.

Thanks to one positive vote, and one not terrible one, they still managed a

4.5!

Okay, we're done with the thruples (for now) and I swear I planned this before someone commented it last time (and used the only good pic I found on top:

Mora & Keith!

And while my series of dumb threesome jokes is over I probably won't be any more popular because... I don't really care for it? Don't get me wrong, Mora is great (violent tendencies not withstanding) and Keith is fine as a side character, but his attitude towards women is childish, to be kind. I guess the implication is she... Corrected him before going out with him but even then, there's far too little screen time of them as a couple for me to care. And yes, this might be weird because I'm a huge fan of Kati and Patrick, who have a very similar dynamic, but they have a lot more time to display their affection. (And yes, 00 is like four times the length of 0083, but I still won't pretend these two got any proper development)

I know this is a popular couple, and I'm happy to hear you gush about them, but I'm afraid you'll have a hard time changing my mind: Mora is too good for Keith. She either needs to be his mom and raise him to be a man which... Isn't my thing. Or she's settling for someone way beneath her. I mean, she's limited by the cast but she doesn't have to hook up with anybody.

The Couples of Gundam #19 - Atra, Kudelia & Mikazuki

There was a lot of agreement last time about the two of them being adorable and some argument about canon... Which is totally understandable, we can't include just any ship here or we'd never finish. But, again without downplaying genuine friendships, I feel like they were meant to be more, and the overall average agrees, kinda.

8.87!

But let's talk about canon again. About the first canon couple including two women for example. 😇

And don't anyone argue it's not canon... I remember there being some argument about thruples and underage girls getting pregnant back in the Atra poll? And I can kind of see why people maybe don't love this pair+, it's not among my top favourites, and certainly has genuine flaws, but I do like quite a few things they do with it. Maybe I'm the weirdo for being fine with two women not fighting over a man but just... Agreeing? It's probably not that easy but I like the solution. And while Mika is not my favourite protagonist, I don't hate him and can see what draws them to him.

But again, way more curious about your opinions!

The Couples of Gundam #18 - Toniya & Ennil

There were some crazy people who didn't give full marks but overall the amazing love story between two Gundams got the good reviews it deserves. Minor deviations from perfect but still very good:

9.77!

Okay, I'll stay a little weird but I remember mentioning it way back when and before I forget it again:

Toniya & Ennil!

And yes, obviously there should be room in fiction for women just being friends, and shipping shouldn't ruin that. But have anyone watch episode 20 and switch either of their gender and tell me that's not the beginning of a romance! I know it's accepted canon for some that the ending isn't quite as it seems for them and the boys, but I think there's more than crazy Yuri fans looking for ships. No, there's not much that goes beyond friendship in the plain text of the show, but it's if nothing else a deep, solid one that could easily have been more. Back in 1996! Probably why they didn't dare air it in the US!

What? I'm not obsessed with a gyaru/tsundere (?) ship, shut up.

The Couples of Gundam #17 - Exia & Setsuna

Some people agreed with me last time, but a lot liked and praised the polycule (?) much more and as always, I'm glad they get so much love! It's not that I don't wish them the best 😇 still, a few lower votes did hurt the score..

8.26!

Today let's look at the real best 00 couple (until 00 ruined it, but Exia still kind of won in the end? Though, should I have included Graham?)

Exia & Setsuna!

Is there even anything to debate? True love only exists between Gundams.

(Sorry, you knew I had to do it~)

I guess maybe my take wasn't that unpopular. But opinions went far in both directions, though there weren't that many votes. I'll still stick to my opinion that it's somewhat middling and the average agrees:

6.73!

Let's see if I can be more unpopular today... I don't care much about this pair either.

Marie & Hallelujah

I like both characters well enough, but to me the meat of her story is with Taisa. I also rarely care for amnesia plots. I mean, I get it, they were each other's only friend for a while when they were kids but for me that doesn't make an engaging romance. Halle trying to rescue a friend from being a brainwashed weapon of war? I can absolutely work with that. Halle trying to get her away from Taisa so he can bang her? Not so much. I'm exaggerating a bit here, but that scene in episode... 7 gets me emotional because of Soma and Sergej, not Marie and Halle. And then it suffers because Marie reverts to Soma after he dies and they can't be a proper couple then either. It's fine in the movie and I don't hate it but... It's just not my thing most of the time. (They can be cute, though)

There were a few differing opinions last time, but while I can kind of see where they are coming from I still wholeheartedly disagree and stick with the majority, these two kids are important and mostly beloved parts of 00:

9.04!

I don't want to do too many minor couples but a few more are on the agenda, maybe a slightly more controversial one today(?): Anew and Lyle.

I don't hate it on paper but it felt far too rushed for me to really enjoy it. It's likely just Anew appearing kind of late and most of the relationship happening off screen. I assume there were reasons for it but due to that it couldn't really tug at my heart strings but left me pretty disappointed with a story that could have been told better. Especially since it's meant to humanise the Coordinates? Sorry, Lyle is obviously irresistible but Anew just left me wanting more.

Almost complete agreement yesterday that the two are great and the beginning just was a necessary step for Patrick to be a better person. Lots of perfect scores and while I adore them, I think the lack of depth would have kept me from being quite as generous. But many of you were, leading to a

9.7!

I'll stick to 00 for the next few days just to get some order into this

Let's be a bit more serious and look at one couple that is a genuine plot point in the story: Louise and Saji!

Despite my dumb brain sometimes glossing over their existence, I for the most part really like them. I don't even mind her being a bit annoying in the beginning, it just makes her appear normal. I guess if I did have a complaint, it would be parts of season 2 when it gets very dramatic or he's shouting her name a bit too much, like that's gonna do something. But overall, I really really like them, especially considering they're not main characters, they play their part really well and got even my cold heart a bit sappy. (Damn that hospital scene)

But again, it's not about me but about you, so let me know what you think.

I didn't expect a lot of feedback for last time, but despite few comments there was still a decent number of upvotes. I guess at some point I'll get around to reading Crossbone and learn why you like it so much 😇

9!

I thought we'd go a bit less serious this time and look at a 00 couple with a somewhat infamous dynamic:

Kati & her lapdog!

I obviously don't condone any kind of violence, be it domestic or otherwise, but... It's somewhat refreshing when it goes the way it does here? Yes, there are a few other couples which involve violence but I'm okay with (fine, bringing up Ranma is probably unfair, but I'll also admit Fairy Tail is a bit of a guilty pleasure and I do like Gajeel and Levy) Patrick just needed to learn his lesson, okay? And it's totally worth it for one of the best side couples. They just have an adorable dynamic without taking up too much time. Easily one of my favourites, even if it's not that deep.

But again, I care more about your opinions, though going back to Kati's entry in the polls I'm going to guess I'm not alone (?)

I'm a bit surprised how much attention last time got, I didn't expect people to care for that couple but apparently you do. Glad to know! I really can't remember details... The bit about Meyrin vaguely rang a bell but it's been too long. (Also, I guess I'm boring/ weird but I rarely care about VA relationships)

There was a lot of praise but some lower votes but I think those kept it a bit interesting, leading to a...

7.55

Someone (sorry, forgot to note your name 🫣) asked for it but since Crossbone is among the Gundam Media I have no relation with, I can't even dig in the recessed of my mind for an opinion here...

Bernadette and Tobia!

Teach me about them, kind redditors who are more well read than me.

▲ 250 r/Gundam

A bit controversial last time... I don't recall her voice being too grating on me but then I don't remember a lot (or is it a dub thing?). But I can see them being more siblings than lovers? Kinda. What with her being pretty immature (though he is only slightly better)

Anyway, the strong controversy leads to a lower average of

5.42!

Let's look at canon again: Luna & Shinn. I... Don't remember a lot again? I think they were okay? They weren't terrible in Freedom but it's not like they did much. I assume it's grown well enough over the show but it's just been too long to have a real opinion for me, sorry!

But hit me with your thoughts on Destiny's canon love story.

u/Kato_86 — 22 days ago
▲ 45 r/Gundam

Some debate on the original tragic cyber newtype story last time, especially one strong disagreement, but overall positive results and nobody telling me I'm crazy because of the age thing. I'm honestly surprised. It's mostly the one harsh critic but also a kind of low number of votes, I expected this UC classic to spark more debate. Anyway, the average comes to...

8.2!

And fittingly we'll look at the remake this time: Stella & Shinn. And while I know Destiny is unpopular, I slightly prefer this because it doesn't cause me to imagine weird age disparity and I think Stella had a bit more screen time to get to know her(?) Also, while I prefer Kamille and Four as people, I don't hate Shinn or Stella, and the story is slightly modernized. I can very much understand people disagreeing and it's again a far off memory for both, but in direct contrast I prefer the remake a little bit.

But again, feel free to tell me how it's just a cheap copy or why this is so much better 😇 (probably not the latter?)
