Camping in the Great Smokey Mountain NP

Hello! I will be camping in GSM NP in a few weeks and was looking for some advice. I am an avid hiker and love to camp so I game for more intense hiking.

I was thinking of camping at the Balsam Mountain campsite because it will be much cooler, and hopefully away from many of the larger congregations of crowds. If anyone has camped here before, would you recommend it? Are there a lot of good hikes to do in that area?

I have a few concerns with choosing this site. One is that I will be alone, and while I am comfortable hiking alone, I would prefer to be on trails where there may be other people around. Additionally, I am concerned that this camp site is too far from some of the main must see areas of the park.

I know that this park is quite large, and there is a ton to do, but if you have any recommendations on camp sites, hikes, or areas to avoid, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

Help me identify this hummingbird! (Found in Northern/Central California)

I broke out my camera and started taking pictures again, and spotted this little fella at the campsite I was at. Was wondering if you could help me identify what it is. There were many other hummingbirds, but this was the only one with bright colors like this. Sorry if it is not a great picture, I am still learning.

Use of paralytics for seizure patients

This has been a bit of a discussion amongst some of my paramedic coworkers, ED pharmacists, and EM physicians at the local receiving facilities.

When we have a patient with an underlying seizure etiology that needs to be intubated, should we be using paralytics? On one hand, there is copious amounts of research that support better first past success rates with routine administration of paralytics. But on the flip side, use of paralytics can mask seizure activity.

Now I feel I am woefully undereducated on this topic (thanks American paramedic education), so I have a few questions. I apologize if some of them are rather elementary. And for the purposes here, let’s say that the only paralytic available is longer acting medication like Rocuronium.

- Should we be using paralytics when intubating seizure patients?

- If we do use paralytics, the pt is still able to seize, and the ED does not have EEGs readily available so there is no way to know if the patient is actively seizing, correct? If a patient is seizing whose airway is controlled, and has paralytics on board, what exactly would happen? The most eloquent way it’s been described to me is it can “cook their brain” but I don’t really understand what that actually means.

- As EM physicians, how do you go about managing airways in these extremis patients? We have very little resources comparatively, so we try to get ahead of the game with aggressive airway management early on if indicated.

- Are there any articles, or texts that you suggest I read to look more into the nitty gritty details for seizures and epilepsy?

Thanks in advance

Edit: to be clear I am not talking about first or second line treatments for seizures, I’m specifically talking about when it comes to airway management after the seizures have been controlled in the field.

Time to upgrade to a mirrorless camera for landscape/wildlife photography. Suggestions?

Budget: $2,500 USD

Country: United States

Condition: New, would consider used if buying from reputable site

Type of Camera: Mirrorless

Intended use: Photography primarily but would like to be able to do videography as a secondary. Primarily landscape and wildlife photography.

What features do you absolutely need: weather sealing, large selection of secondary brand lenses/large lens environment.

What features would be nice to have: dual SD card slots, fully articulating screen, cheap extra batteries.

Portability: Fit in a medium size camera bag. I typically carry the camera on a chest mount when I hike. Lenses would go in hiking bag.

Cameras you're considering: A7iii. I know it’s an older generation but I’d spend the money saved from buying the A7iv for more glass. I’d be able to buy a tamron telephoto lens and a Sony prime lens. I also think it has plenty of capability for my intermediate/non professional needs.

Cameras you already have: canon T6i. I’ve had it for 10 ish years and have used the hell out of it. Love it but it’s old and I think I’ve outgrown it. I don’t have a ton of lenses so I’m happy to move away from the Canon brand.

Notes: I’m open to suggestions, but have always had my eyes set on Sony cameras. I like how expansive the lens ecosystem is.

How should I go about upgrading to a mirrorless camera for landscape/nature photography?

(1) Budget, country, and currency:

$2,500 USD

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?

Canon rebel T6i (see below)

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?

Primarily landscapes and nature/animals

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?

Photography primarily but I also love videography.

How should I go about upgrading to mirrorless camera for landscape/nature photography?

I’ve had my Canon rebel T6i for like close to 10 years now and it is far time for me to finally upgrade. In these 10 years I’ve just used the camera as a hobbyist, with periods of long breaks along the way. I feel pretty comfortable with the fundamentals so I think I am ready for a more “grown up” camera.

I don’t have many lenses so I don’t necessarily need to stay in the Canon ecosystem. I’d actually prefer to move away from Canon. I’ve been thinking of buying a Sony A7iii. I know that it’s an older camera, but I was planning on using the money saved to buy lenses. The kit comes with the Sony 28-70mm lens, and I was going to buy the Tamron 30-300 mm F 4.5-6.3 lens for my starter telephoto. Also the 50 mm f1.8 prime lens.

I’ve looked on marketplace and eBay for used a7iii and lens bundles but haven’t found much, and what I did find wasn’t really all that cheaper than new. I’d love advice on if this is silly, and I should move in a different direction. Thanks in advance!
