Very large tree hole
This tree is an old stump that reported around the base, leaving a cavity in the middle. It is now full of bark and leaves and other duff. What are we calling it?

What would you call this one? A 7 foot long tree hole busted open a perfect 3 inch splinter. Sadly on a beautiful red oak.
66 inch trunk, 108 feet tall, 74.5 foot crown spread. 335 points on the champion tree score.
These three old girls are away for genetic testing, soon I will know what exact species or hybrid I am working with. They all show the large leaves of native elms but grow in a stand of Siberian elms. I am mainly trying to investigate if they are true slippery (or maybe American) elms or possibly Ulmus x intermedia, the slippery Siberian hybrid.
I didn’t measure this one, probably 36+ inches DBH
51 inches DBH, one of the two trunks is dead and dropped and it’s larger than most trees
This box elder would have been doomed but it lodged itself in this beautiful American elm. Now it’s slowly rotting away stuck in the crotch. The elm, for what it’s worth, is starting to eat the box elder. Both trees are alive, but the box elder is full of rotten holes like this
This is a cool find for me, I have now located lingering specimens of Green, White and Black Ash in the three counties surrounding where I live.
Sometimes the only trees that were spared around here, lucky for them they make such tasty products
Seemingly healthy growing on the edge of a swamp
Very long lived trees, I see woodpecker holes in them a lot
A lot of people don’t realize how large and impressive Prunus serotina can be. These trees grew in almost perfect conditions, an open, fertile field that is finally starting to close in around them. When they get like this, they are just as valuable as an old maple, oak or walnut in the ecosystem services they provide. Even when they die, they will provide lots of services for decades to come
