Advice: Withdrawing 401k

Hello, I lost my job 8 months ago, have submitted over 400 job applications and have recently landed 2 interviews. Unemployment has ended and I have drained my savings to pay my bills. Im desperate at this point that Im considering cashing out my 401k with MerrillLynch , has anyone had experience doing that with this company and if so is it easier to take a loan out against my 401k or to cash it out?
