Defamation: what can or can't you say?

I'm being evicted (notice is next March) from my flat and the landlord is extended family.

Without giving too much away, he came to me and asked me to move in here and I agreed, offering to pay him a good bit of rent to help him cover his debts. I initially believed it was a mutually beneficial arrangement and I wanted to help a family member in dire straits. I quickly learnt that he'd been lying to me and was spending on the rent on the drink and such instead.

In terms of the tenancy and what he has to face, he's acted the maggot too much with Revenue (rent in cash) and all that and I think he knows he's probably fucked in the inevitable RTB dispute that I'll open come the new year, so there's no need to address that.

What I want to know is: what can I tell people about what's going on in my life? I know he has a solicitor and I'm positive his last email to me about this was worded by a solicitor, containing a veiled threat of litigation.

In all fairness I'm fairly upset about this since I'm going to be homeless and he really has just lied to me for money over and over for years now while being a shit landlord. I'm not looking for validation about the circumstances here, just a clear explanation of what I can say (in terms of what I sincerely believe to be 100% true) and where I can say it from a legal perspective. Cheers all
