I’m watering my friend’s garden and have been watering the leaves, will this kill the plant?

I have been taking care of my friends garden while she is away and I learned today that I shouldn’t water the actual leaves of a plant but instead just directly water the soil. I have been watering this way for 5 days and all the plants seem fine. Will this kill the plant after I have been doing this for 5 days or will it be ok if I stop now? Is there a way to remedy this or should I just make sure to just water the soil moving forward?
