His beady eyes began swelling. She knew the look.

"I have to."
Ava felt her tone slip, bleeding into duty.

"Why?"

Almost unnoticeably, her eyes, too, streamed the same tears. She waited for her mind to latch onto something - an excuse, or a firm reason that she'd known the boy could understand.

"Because someone has to. And it won't be you, and it won't be mom -- and it can't be dad."
Another slip - just out of her own control, voice weakened and tone soft, yet so unfamiliar to the boy. He'd never seen her cry.

Ed tried to pry himself away. Ava brought him back by his shoulders. His sobs broke any hope of speech -- she could barely discern his words, but understood the feeling all too well. All that confusion, and anger, and betrayal. Why fight, why die, why--

"...When I come back, everything's gonna be alright. It'll go back to normal. It'll be okay, Ed. I promise."

The boy knew not to lend much credence to promises. But there'd been little other choice now. No refuge but that within her words.

"Okay."
