EB-2 NIW Profile Evaluation – Structural Engineer (Need Honest Feedback)

Hi everyone,
I am considering filing for an EB-2 NIW as a backup option while my employer-sponsored PERM process is ongoing. I would appreciate honest feedback on whether my profile is competitive or if I should wait and strengthen my case.
Background
H-1B holder

Structural Engineer

Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering

Based in the U.S.

Will have 3+ years of U.S. structural engineering experience by September 2026

Planning to obtain PE license around September 2026

Professional Experience
Structural engineering experience involving design and detailing of various building projects (healthcare, commercial, recreation, stadiums etc.)

Experience with structural analysis, design codes, construction documents, and coordination with project teams

Research / Academic Background
Master's thesis focused on earthquake engineering and structural resilience

A PhD student is continuing related research work

Co-authored an engineering textbook that is used by engineering students for exam preparation and as a reference book( used outside US)

Have a research paper with my advisor that is currently in the final stages and expected to be submitted

STEM / Nonprofit Leadership
Outside of my professional work, I have been involved in a nonprofit focused on STEM education and professional development.
Some highlights:
Developed mentorship and leadership programs for STEM students/professionals

Reached 50+ participants internationally through mentorship initiatives

Collaborated with nonprofit organizations through formal MOUs

Developed a women's leadership and confidence course for STEM participants

The course was published through a regional youth education platform in collaboration with my nonprofit organization

Approximately 198 people registered for the course

Have website documentation, partnership evidence, participant testimonials, and some media coverage

Other Leadership
Volunteer leadership role in a professional communication/leadership organization

Potential Timeline
September 2026: PE license + 3 years U.S. experience

Late 2026: Research paper submission

December 2026: Possible NIW filing

Questions:
How competitive does this profile look for an EB-2 NIW?

Would you file in December with a submitted paper, or wait until publication?

Does the fact that the textbook was published outside the U.S. reduce its value?

Is the nonprofit/STEM education work meaningful for an NIW, or is it considered unrelated?

YWhat weaknesses or RFE risks do you see?

I understand NIW approval depends heavily on how the case is presented, so I am looking for feedback on the strength of the underlying profile and what areas I should improve before filing.
Thanks!

Move from structural engineering

Has anyone here made the jump from structural engineering into a project management role where you’re not doing design work? Looking for people who moved into PM- whether that’s on the construction side, consulting, or even outside the industry entirely.

Specifically curious about:

**•	Your transition path**: How did you get into PM? Did you need additional certifications (PMP, etc.), or did your engineering background open doors naturally?
**•	Why you made the switch**: What was the pull away from design work? Better work-life balance? More people/business-focused work? Different career trajectory?
**•	The role itself**: What does your day-to-day look like now? Scheduling, budgeting, client management, coordinating teams?
**•	Do you use your engineering background**: Is your structural knowledge still relevant, or did you pretty much leave that technical side behind?
**•	Regrets or wins**: Looking back, was it worth it? Do you miss design work at all?

Interested in both people who stayed in structural/construction PM and those who completely pivoted industries.

Thanks

Switch from structural to project/ product management in a different industry

Hi
Anyone here made the switch from structural engineering to project management in a different industry?
I have some leadership experience in terms of starting a non profit , leading as area director for a non profit (volunteer role) , leading a small project as part of my current job, mentoring new engineers etc
I want to move towards a more creative side of things, anyone made the switch to project or product management and what did you do etc
