Potentially dumb question… am I supposed to be putting a string in my leca cup down into the water?

Can I get your advice? I see folks putting plants in two-tiered plastic containers with leca or dirt over water in their cases, but I feel lost on how to do that and whether or not I’m helping or hurting my plants by trying. What’s your recommendation?

99% of my plants are in leca and filtered water and they're OK but not thriving - what's "best practices" for transitioning them into soil instead?
