the Mirena ruined my mental health

I’m in my late 20s and had always been on and off the pill. I tried the implant in 2020 and it was terrible and made me break out and so came off it immediately!

I was put on the Mirena after having an abortion in March last year.
The abortion itself was a really horrible decision to make (I didn’t want to do it, long story) but the doctors decided to ask if I wanted the Mirena to be inserted at the same time, and in the midst of all of the chaos, I didn’t really look into it that much and just said OK!

First few months were fine. Until I started to get really painful anal cramps that would literally stop me from doing anything. I never saw a doctor about it (I have a habit of belittling my own problems) but when I went to my gyno later down the line she said that the Mirena was in the right place so perhaps the Mirena was just settling into my body.

SETTLING IN? These anal cramps literally felt like I was being stabbed down there. But I persevered and they did eventually disappear.

Now this is when it becomes quite horrible, 6 months in.
I started noticing some pimples here and there. I’ve always had great skin. Then before I knew it, I had so much cystic acne, comedones, black heads, a greasy forehead which I had never struggled with before. BACNE! And even CHESTNE! WHAT!?

But I put it down to me being stressed. Only that, I wasn’t even stressed about anything before the Mirena. But another thing this Mirena made me feel constant anxiety, constant depression. It made me lose my appetite.

I found it hard to get out of bed in the morning. I was constantly overthinking everything and I had a constant tightness in my chest, with a shortness of breath and a pit in my stomach. Always angry at people, and picking fights.

I slowly put two and two together and realized all of these problems were due to the Mirena. I researched the ingredients in the Mirena are the same as that in the implant.

Turns out some people can’t have the contraceptions that encourage androgens, and if you’re one of those people, you should be looking into anti or low androgenic contraceptive methods like Lizinna, Cilique, and Yasmin combined pills.

Upon removing my coil, I felt instant relief. It felt like there was a lot of pressure built up down there that was suddenly removed. On top of that the anxious feeling in my chest is disappearing with every day.

I have a new lust for life that I lost for the past year. I am able to look forward to things but most of all I can actually LAUGH!

I’m not saying this will be the same for everyone, but if you didn’t get along with the implant, the mini pill or the hormonal coil, you may be the same as me and benefit from the newer combined pills.
