Is it worth doing a major maintenance at 350,000 km (217k miles), or should I save up for another car? (Opel Astra J 1.7 CDTI)
Hi everyone,
I currently own a 2013 Opel/Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 1.7 CDTI (88kW/120hp). It has been a great car, but it just hit 350,000 km (around 217,000 miles) on the clock.
I was planning to do a pretty massive maintenance overhaul to keep it running well for the next few years. The planned service includes:
• All 4 shock absorbers (struts)
• Complete brakes (front and rear discs + pads)
• Oil and all filters (oil, air, cabin, fuel)
• Timing belt kit + water pump
I estimate this whole job will cost me somewhere around €1,000 - €1,500 (parts and labor at an independent shop).
Here is my dilemma: Is it still worth investing this kind of money into a car with such high mileage?
While the engine itself (Isuzu block) is known to be bulletproof, I am worried that after doing all this work, some other expensive parts might just give up soon due to the mileage (like the original clutch, dual-mass flywheel, DPF, or the M32 gearbox bearings).
Would it be smarter to just do the bare minimum, invest/save this money, and eventually buy a newer car down the line?
What would you do in my situation? I would appreciate any advice or experiences with this engine at high mileage. Thanks!
