Research advisor suddenly adding random prof after paper is finished ??
so me and my friends are 3rd year students (CSE) and this is our first CS research paper... we worked on it for months and finally finished drafting the journal paper.
now suddenly our advisor says she wants to add one more author, literally after everything is done. We asked who it was and she said it’s her PhD guide from another college and “the post is honoured” :D... tbh we didn't want to add her in the list of authors as well bcz all she did was run Turnitin on our paper and inform us about plagiarism levels.
SHE 101% DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT OUR PAPER IS ABOUT! It was dumb of us to choose her to help us...we only did so to understand the process of "publication" bcz this is our first paper and she seemed like a helpful teacher.
we politely said that only the 4 of us actually worked on the paper and earlier also it was agreed no more authors would be added... Then she called and explained that this is “how academia works”, networking matters, senior names help with journals, he’s a dignitary, he can communicate with journals and stuff, and apparently when she was a PhD student he was her guide and apparantly she also added HIS guide in her papers :)
now we’re just sitting here confused af because ethically this feels weird but at the same time we are literally 3rd yr students arguing with our advisor on our first paper....
is this actually common in academia/research or are we getting cooked here? bcz i I'm enraged to the point that I want to smash my phone :D
