I have a new house that used to be a rental and I wanted to try to change my lock cores myself. I don't have the control key(s) and I don't know if the cores are all the same brand. I can't figure out online if drilling the locks will safely remove just the core.
I have a front door with a deadbolt and a handle, a knob going to my garage and then a sliding glass door in back all keyed alike. I don't know if there's a way to purchase all four of those things keyed alike.
Should I just take them all off the doors and bring them to a locksmith? Would it make sense to have them remove the cores for me (I assume they have all the control keys) and buy new cores, or does it make more sense to rekey?
I like doing the work myself so I know how to work on it in the future, but I don't have any special skills and I don't want to buy anything overly expensive. I would like to save money if possible. Thank you for your help.
