STF is this?

My tech had to do a gain entry for someone locked inside a security office and brought me this off of a Sargent Mortise 4870 series style deadbolt. He says this ceased and needs to be replaced.

Admittedly, I have no idea what this is and it looks like it came off of a larger thumb turn, but he's newer and didn't remember seeing anything else that it was part of. I checked both sargent and Adams rite with nothing. Any help with a part number?

thanks

Help identify this key?

We found some keys in my late father's stuff and we are wondering if anyone can identify this key type? We tried it everywhere and it doesn't fit anything here. There are no markings or numbers on it.

We are wondering if it's maybe storage or something? But Google lens was no help and neither was chat GPT.

Advice

Hello everyone I hope you’re all well, I’m just after some advice as the title suggests. A family member lost a set of house keys today and in panic rang the first locksmith she found online. She was quoted £59 to come out and open the door for her. The locksmith came out and drilled a hole into the lock opened the door and charged £258 - emergency call out fee and lock drilling he wrote on the receipt. Alone and obviously intimidated she felt she had no other choice to pay. I’ve attached a photo of the current state of the lock and just wondering if it will be easy to replace by just getting a new barrel with new keys? as she is now scared she will have to call another locksmith out tomorrow and face the same thing & be quoted for a full lock replacement.

Any help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance 🙏

Norton 1601

Anyone else having real problems with these closers lately?
We have always used these as our go-to closers and have installed hundreds of them.
Lately, I find that I have to bring two on a job, due to one of them being bad out of the box. Mostly no resistance in the latch sequence, but sometimes just completely erratic behavior.
Anyone else? And what do you all use?

Anyone following the changes Google made to fight locksmith scams? How's it affecting business?

Not a locksmith. I recently started looking into the industry for business, and went down a rabbit hole on scam locksmiths. Seems to be a pretty big issue?

There was a video I watched where Google's legal counsel went on a PR tour and alerted the general public about the scams, and even sued some of the culprits.

Then found out they're putting in new processes to vet locksmiths for google search and google ads.

What surprised me most was learning legitimate locksmiths got hit too. Did Google ever actually improve this problem, or is it still a mess today?

Cylinder identification (roll shutter lock)

New here. I need to replace this cylinder as it is worn and causing issues. It is a two-pull pin tumbler lock with 3 pins. The top pins are falling into the plug preventing regular operation of the lock. I can't find anything on ebay, Amazon, or Google in general. Reverse image search is completely off. The closest thing I have found are some Yale roll shutter locks but most have incorrect measurements or only one key pull position. Does anyone recognize this old cylinder? Would save the customer a ton if we can replace just this part. Even manufacturers to look into would be a great lead. Thanks a bunch.

Key tool plus vs Smart pro

Key Tool Plus vs Smart Pro, do I really need Smart Pro?

I’m UK-based and new to auto locksmith programming. I’ve just completed a programming course and the trainer recommended owning both Key Tool Plus and Smart Pro.

The problem is Smart Pro seems very expensive once you include the token/subscription system.

My current plan is:

  • OBD programming
  • Solderless EEPROM/bench work only
  • No soldering jobs
  • Mainly aiming for common UK vehicles and trying to cover around 70–80% of the market

What do you suggest i do ?

The correct way to be a locksmith.

Hi everyone I hope you are doing well and healthy, I M24 a European citizen, and lives in German and I want to be a locksmith.
What is the proper way to be a locksmith here?
I read that I have to do metallbuer (ausbildong) but it’s not locksmithing.
Do you think I can just apply for locksmithing jobs without any experience or study for a 3years certificate that is quite related to it and then proceed with it?
Thank you very much for reading🙏

Eagle Lock 2B12 Help

I bought a cabinet with this lock but it didn’t come with a key. If anyone can point me in the right for either (1) a key placement or (2) full lock replacement, that would be amazing. Open to other suggestions.

Thick door adaptation

Long story short, I have 12 heavy steel decorative doors for my new commercial building. I bought them a year and a half ago and due to delays in construction they have been in storage. The doors are 3-1/2" thick, but the handle sets and deadbolts that came with them are (incorrectly) for standard doors of closer to 2" thickness. I am beyond the timeframe to make returns, and to avoid having to buy lock/handle sets a second time, I am hoping to convert them myself using longer machine screws, and extending the spindles using the correct length of added spindle rod with sleeves. I'm struggling with the tail piece on the deadbolts. Have you seen anything like this example before? It looks like the toothed nut-looking ring should come off in order to release the tail piece, but I haven't tried anything other than fingers to avoid damaging it.

Two questions. 1- Does it come apart? 2- Where do I find longer tail pieces?

As a last resort, how can I extend the existing tail piece?

Can someone point me in the right direction of a replacement door knob and deadbolt for this exterior door?

Just bought an early 1900s home and found this door in the cellar that will fit the front door. Before going through the trouble of stripping the paint and refinishing, what kind of lock would I get for this? I grew up in an old home with original doors so I know the existing holes are for mortise/skeleton key locks but is there a more draft-friendly version that exists?
