Almost 2 weeks ago my dog, a 5yo 8 pound spayed poodle maltese mix, became lethargic and didn’t have much of an apatite. I was able to get her in the next day to see her vet and they did some labs. Everything came back normal except for her hematology which indicated she was anemic but her body was still doing its job on making reticulocytes. The vet went ahead and put her on an Baytril and Prednisone and the hope was for her body to stop the blood cells from dying off at the rate they were. Fast forward to last Tuesday when I brought her in for them to check her hematology she was still a bit lethargic and while she wasn’t really eating her regular food unless I gave her apatite stimulant the vet gave us she was eating the wet food I started giving her. When they did her hematology the numbers had gone down a smidge but her bones were making plenty of new cells so the vet put her on Mycophenolate to see if this would possibly help and we would recheck in a week. As last week progressed she was still lethargic but Thursday and Friday she seemed almost back to her usual self, I was all day Saturday and Sunday but my family said nothing out of the ordinary happened so I had high hopes her appointment today would end positively. I just got back from the vet and while new cells are being made her numbers have decreased even more and she’s getting to close to needing a blood transfusion and suggested that it’s probably time to take her to the specialist about an hour away from us. I’m going to talk with my family to make a game plan on how to get to the specialist next week but now I’m worried that this is something like cancer and if we are looking at a high chance of this being too late for her. I’m sorry for the long post but I want to be prepared now if saying good bye might be the likely outcome.
