Delta downgraded my Premium Select after canceling my flight out of Tokyo, then offered me 24k miles as "compensation" for a middle seat across the Pacific
Long-time Delta customer since 2017, posting this because I've exhausted normal channels and figured the hive mind / Delta's social team might be able to weigh in.
Flying HND-LAX-AUS back from a 2.5 week trip to Japan and Korea on Friday May 15. Here's how it went:
5 AM Japan time: Notification that HND-LAX DL09 on May 15th 2026 is delayed 4 hours. Fine, more Tokyo. But now my LAX-AUS connection is too tight, so I message Delta and ask them to just move the second leg to a later flight.
Agent #1 (chat): Tells me it's impossible to change just one leg, the whole itinerary has to be rebooked.
My cousin is on the exact same flight, messages in around the same time, and the agent he gets changes JUST his second leg. No problem at all. So the "policy" was clearly not a policy.
Agent #2 (phone): I call in. She says she can rebook me but I "might be downgraded." I paid 204,000 SkyMiles specifically for Premium Select on the international leg and Comfort+ on the domestic. I ask her why a schedule change would downgrade a cabin I already paid for. Her answer: "that's what the system is saying." No actual explanation. I'm stuck overseas with no good alternative so I take it. She then hangs up before assigning me a seat.
Agent #3 (chat): Bless this person, actually helpful, gets me a seat.
Noon Japan time: The HND-LAX flight gets canceled entirely. I try to accept Delta's rebooking through the app and get "unable to accept the flight at this time" on loop.
Agent #4 (chat): Only Comfort+ seats left are middle seats. Main Cabin has nothing. I'm 6'2", 190 lbs, the entire reason I burned 204k miles was to NOT be in a middle seat across the Pacific. No options. I take the middle seat. Right before the flight I get downgraded again to Main Cabin middle seat...
Flew 12+ hours in a middle seat main cabin after paying for Premium Select. Bags were also delayed through customs in DTW, but honestly that's the least of it. I was only issued 24k miles back and the math doesn't checkout
I paid 204k miles. Roughly half the value of that redemption is the international leg (the long-haul Premium Select is where most of the miles go). I was downgraded on that leg. 24k miles is not even close to representative of half the trip. I think a fair outcome is something closer to 90k miles refunded (less the 24k already issued).
What bugs me most isn't even the cancellation — stuff happens. It's:
- Four agents, four different stories
- A redemption product I paid extra for, not delivered
- An agent hanging up mid-process
- An app that wouldn't let me accept the rebooking
- Token compensation that doesn't match the actual downgrade
- The lack of proper communicate from Delta on why the flight was cancelled and lack of options to get me back home properly since everyone on that flight also needed to get home wouldn't the better option be to reposition a plane?
I've been loyal for almost a decade. This isn't the first time something like this has happened and I'm at the point where I'm seriously rethinking where my travel spend goes.
