  • Living with ADHD – Thom Hartmann
  • You Mean I’m Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?! – Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo (a widely recommended read for adults newly diagnosed with ADHD)

NSW ADHD Prescribing Authority Timeframes ?

Hi everyone,

I was just diagnosed with ADHD by a psychiatrist and have completed all the recommended blood tests and ECG.

Today I saw a GP who is happy to prescribe under a shared-care arrangement and has received a letter from the psychiatrist supporting this. She has prescribed stimulants before for existing ADHD patients but this will be her first time applying for authority to prescribe for a newly diagnosed patient.

She is now preparing the application to the NSW Pharmaceutical Regulatory Unit (PRU).

For anyone who has gone through this process recently in NSW, how long did it take for approval to come through once the application was submitted ?

Was it a matter of days, weeks, or longer ?

I'm just trying to get a realistic idea of current turnaround times while I wait.

Thanks !

Looking for NSW-based GP prescriber who is comfortable dealing with patients who have PTSD

Hello everyone,

I just received my diagnosis from OzADHD however the psychiatrist mentioned my history of complex trauma in my patient summary which is used to request treatment from a GP.

When I went to see a GP yesterday for treatment (I hadn't seen him before, but had been told by the clinic in advance that he was an ADHD medication prescriber), he refused to treat me due to my trauma history. I was not very happy, having made a special trip to the clinic and also left out of pocket for the appointment :/

Wondering if anyone can recommend a GP who:

  1. Is based in NSW

  2. Comfortable prescribing to people with PTSD (I have a very good handle on it these days)

  3. Does telehealth (I am living in rural northwest Sydney and find it difficult to get to in-person appointments).

Thanks in advance.
