GPi Case 2 + CM4 (eMMC): boots fine on a Waveshare IO board over HDMI, but won't boot in the case

I have been trying to set up my newly arrived GPI Case 2 with a CM4 )eMMC + wifi version). I flashed the RetroPie 4.8 (Pi4/400) using the available guides online in two different ways:

  • with the CM4 mounted on the GPi Case
  • the module mounted on a waveshare io board

In both instances the flash was verified. I then patched the Retroflag display files under the root directory of "boot" volume.

The issue: I switch it on and some backlight appears but the screen in dark/black.

I changed the config file back to the original and mounted the CM4 back to the waveshare.I connected the board to an external monitor over HDMI. First boot of the system run as expected with the filesystem getting resized etc. I then re-patched everything and tried again on the GPi case with the same issue happening.

To be sure that it wasn't just the screen i dropped an ssh and wpa_supplicant.conf files on the boot partition hoping to connect to the GPi case remotely. However, after many attemps both files still exist on that directory and the machine is not connected to my home network.

Notes:

  • the device is charged
  • i attempted all types of runs with an external power adapter connected (both 15W and higher-wattage PD type chargers)
  • CM4 sits properly on the case: I heard 2 clicks + i am able to flash the eMMC and browse the boot partition over USB while the CMD is mounted on the case

Any suggestions?

Am i supposed to flash a new firmware on the GPi Case? I couldn't find any other solution online.
