Question: Why didn’t Mary and Stack attack Smoke?

Right after Annie falls and Smoke stakes her (1:49), Mary seems to grieve for Annie and rushes towards Smoke and her. Stack pulls her away, saying “no, no, let’s go.”

Why did Stack and Mary leave? They could have turned Smoke right there as he was distracted.

Then, Stack attacks Smoke in the next scene anyway. Loved this movie, but don’t understand this part.

Grant of First Refusal in writing competition

I’m considering entering a writing competition sponsored by an independent publisher. Under the terms of the contest, it states:

Grant of First Refusal
By entering this Contest and in consideration for the same, the three selected winning Entrants grant [the publishers/contest runners] the right of first refusal to publish their Contest submission and all content submitted in connection therewith, using the standard publishing contract of the respective publisher. Authors retain the right to negotiate the terms of that contract.

Is Grant of First Refusal a common aspect in these contests? How does this affect previous submissions/queries for the same manuscript?
If I am offered a contract from a previous submission, can I simply withdraw from the contest?

I’m writing a picture book manuscript. Story has a 7-year old who’s thinking about a classmate who was being annoying to her. My Generation X brain has her narrating _“Darn (or Dang) that —name—!”_ as I would have said back in the day.

My critique partners say that’s outdated language. What do contemporary youngsters say when they’re thinking about their antagonist? Something along the lines of _”What a jerk”_

Thank you.

I’m writing a children’s book story. Story has a 7-year old kid who’s mad at a classmate for being a jerk. My Generation X brain writes “Darn that —name—!” As I would have said way back in the day.

What do contemporary youngsters say when they’re kid-language appropriately cursing their antagonist?

Thank you.

Saw a preview playing on Netflix and was immediately drawn to watch per Paul Giammati (such a great actor) and the elements of love, loss, memory, and technology. I thought immediately of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, my favorite movie ever.

Of all the shows and movies I’ve seen, Eulogy is the one that brings me closest to what I experienced with ESoTSM. My heart hurt and longed and dropped throughout. I enjoyed the way Gianmati’s character delved into his memories.

If you haven’t seen it, please do so. If you have, I’d love to hear what you think. I’ll need a second viewing to come up with better compare and contrast ideas with Eternal Sunshine.

I can easily imagine the science of Lacuna somehow contributing to the memory tech used in Eulogy.
