In the midst of all the exciting new hardware announcements connected to the Made by Google event on Wednesday, August 12, Google also announced a new software feature for existing devices going back to the Pixel 6 series. The new “Tap to share” feature will trigger Quick Share options with another compatible device simply by tapping the devices together. The official blog post by Google said the feature would be available on Wednesday, August 12. However, I do not yet have it on my Pixel 8 Pro running the current version of Android 17 stable or my Pixel 6 Pro running Android 17 QPR 1 Beta 8. Since Quick Share functionality is primarily facilitated through the Google Play services app and not an independent Quick Share app and since the most recent monthly Google Play system update happens around the end of the month, I assume this new feature will come from a server-side update instead of an app update and that Google will continue its abhorrent practice of staggered rollouts over days or even weeks. Has anyone here actually received this new feature yet and tried it out?

Google just released the June 2026 update for Pixel phones and tablets. This includes the highly-anticipated upgrade from Android 16 to Android 17. You can see that the June 2026 update has been added to the official OTA images page at https://developers.google.com/android/ota for eligible devices. Please keep in mind that it may be hours or even days before this update is pushed through to your Pixel device. As usual, I will sideload the update if it is not pushed through to my phone within a few hours.

Shot on Google Pixel 8 Pro Friday, May 1. I have had this phone since it first released in October 2023 and I am still amazed at how good it is at capturing the moon.

(The only edit I make after taking the photos is to turn the Shadow slider all the way down to eliminate light artifacts in the area of the photo outside the moon.)
