I haven’t worked in the round much, and when I have, I’ve found it intimidating. But I wanted to move onto a beanie hat made in the round

(I’ve been making hats that are a rectangle and you slip stitch into a tube and cinch one end together)

I have to laboriously count and concentrate to get the increases right and then double check the counting

I was literally saying out loud, for example, “1,2, in…crease” (with each syllable representing one stitch of the increase) and repeating that all the way around 😂

Is this one of those things where eventually you stop thinking about it? Or are there some of us who will just have to count this out every time forever?

Do you eventually memorize the increases too? I found a chart that was hugely helpful, for future reference

My brother doggo gets all the attention on this sub… I might like my personal space a little more, but I like to be a helper too when conditions are juuuuuust right

My edges were messed up for about the first couple weeks of January, until I learned how not to drop stitches at the end/beginning . Now I’m confident in the number of stitches across, but obviously I have tension changes. Also I swear some of this yarn is different sized even though it’s all the same brand (Brava Worsted)

The second slide is a disappointing dye lot issue. I was running out of that pink, and KnitPicks was sold out and it wasn’t restocking. I got twitchy and I bought some off eBay from somebody. You can really tell the difference. (Look at the different pinks on each side of the dark purple… that’s the same color supposedly). But at least it’s a temperature blanket and not a sweater or something. It’s supposed to be chaotic

My own darn fault. A) I should have been patient and just waited (it was in stock a few days later)
Also B) this is a historical blanket. I should have looked ahead at all the data to see just how much of this color I’d need!

Lesson learned if I ever do this again (doubtful lol)

Starting the sleeves on my first top, and I had to crochet the V-stitch and SC pattern into a chain

I thought I’d lose my damn mind. For one thing I was supposed to get six V stitches on the sleeve and I consistently got five, like five times in a row. And just stitching this relatively complicated thing into a chain that I couldn’t hold it still hardly

But I wouldn’t give up. Turned out I couldn’t “read” my chains very well and I kept skipping too many instead of just two.

It ain’t pretty right now (it’ll be fine once I keep going) BUT I DID IT

(Now to get to the other sleeve… and do this all again for the second panel 🤪)

I’d been so hesitant to start a project with a “complicated” pattern. Everything I’ve done before has been sooo simple. Nothing harder than C2C block stitch or endless hdc or moss stitch. I did a couple of amigurumi (and struggled and didn’t like it).

But I saw a cute top pattern and I decided to go for it.

Turns out it’s kind of easier???? Like, I don’t lose track of where I am because the pattern is so easy to see. Also if I make a mistake it’s immediately obvious because it looks wrong right away.

It helps that I had to gauge swatch it three times lol. So by the time I’ve actually started I understood it pretty well.

Anyway I suppose it’s good that I waited until I was really ready. But I probably could have handled this months ago!

It’s the color Lady Slipper and I believe I will only need one skein. I have too much of the gorgeous deep purple Mulberry and would trade that. But I would just buy it too.

Making a lacy open work top that I’ll wear over a tshirt or a tank top or something.

I managed the starting chain and the first row of DC without miscounting, which feels like a miracle lol.

I really wanted to do a foundation double crochet. I’ve done it before with hdc and fatter yarn, but for some reason this time it looked really wrong every time. Oh well. So I risked the long chain.

This is the first time I figured out how to crochet into the back bump of the chain, too, which is another small victory

I’m doing a historical blanket and I should have paid closer attention to the temperatures when I was ordering yarn and deciding the gauge. This blanket is based on our wedding year, and the summer was unusually cool. There’s not much variety in the summer temps. I’m ending up with huge blocks of this pink I used for the 70s. (By contrast I get to use almost none of a gorgeous deep purple I picked out for 86+)

I’m still having fun with it and I’m not like, crushed. Just missed an opportunity to really think through my temp ranges since I already have all the data

And anyway I’ll remember the consistently cool summer temps when I look at it in years to come, which is sort of the point, right?

I bought a top pattern that said to use sport weight/#2 cotton yarn. I love Hobbii and they were having a sale.

I didn’t see an exact equivalent to “sport weight” or a number. I can’t remember why exactly but the Friends 8/8 line made sense to me.

Now I’m doing the gauge swatch and I was following the video tutorial. My yarn looks too thick, but more to the point, it feels very difficult to work the fan puff stitches with pulling through seven loops on the hook 😬 And they don’t look quite right, either

But maybe this is a skill issue? I don’t want to rebuy the yarn in 8/4, but it would be stupid to suffer through a whole garment wrestling with the wrong yarn and then not have it look as cute because I was stubborn

The lilac yarn is my gauge swatch in progress and the next photo is a still shot from the tutorial indicating how the creator’s fan puff stitches have more breathing room than mine

18 dc x 8.5 rows in st pattern …

So “in stitch pattern” means I have to follow the pattern as if I’m doing a few rows of it? Am I understanding correctly? But only 18 stitches across?

It’s a loose lacy crochet top (the kind of thing you’d wear over a tank top or camisole).

It’s my first garment I’m trying, where the fit matters (as opposed to scarves etc)

My daughter saw this Pusheen scarf on Instagram I think and asked me to make it. OF COURSE. I actually did not believe it would turn out quite this cute. I've only been crocheting about 18 months and I have a habit in general of tackling projects that turn out not much like the picture. (This is most true with recipes and home improvement, tbh)

It took me three months (I'm slow and doing multiple projects) and I took it into classrooms substitute teaching, and the kids were always interested in what I was doing. I also took it onto planes and trains on a trip to Europe. So I have great memories of working on it!

She's happy with it, too. And it was so much fun! I'm proud of myself.

I’m not feeling well today so I’m spending the day on the couch with my crochet. I was watching a tutorial and ran across this video by TL Yarn Crafts … she’s got so many tips and inspiring tidbits in this video she made for her 40th birthday. 40 things to know, something like that. (The headline is humorously clickbaity )

Love her. She was one of my first YouTube crafters I found.
