What animal is this?

I hiked the trail to Wheeler Peak. I saw this animal that looks related to a groundhog. What is this? Also, as I took an image of it there was a little tailless creature that almost ran into it. Is the little tailless creature in image 2 a pika?

Suggestions for Rio Grande del Norte

I’m meeting friends next week in Denver for an annual adventure experience. We’ll hike two 14ers (Torreys and Grays). I’m leaving home early to add a New Mexico visit.

I’m hiking Wheeler Peak early Wednesday morning. I’ll have time to add a visit to Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument. This addition was not part of my plan but an article in this month’s NM Magazine made the case. I’ll head to the monument visitor center and talk with rangers.

But any suggestions from folks who have spent time there? Is there a recommended site at the monument to see? If you had one chance to see one part, what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

What is this?

This is in my work parking lot. (I know one item is a pencil.) I work between a liquor store, a plasma center, a probation/parole office, and a homeless camp.
