Heavier Video Editing - Travel Setup

Heavier Video Editing - Travel Setup

Hi there 👋🏼,

coming from an 2013 Intel MacBook, i'm now searching for a big upgrade. While my current MacBook is still okayish for daily mails and light office work, its definitely overwhelmed with the slightest video editing.

Recently i got into more cinematography and photography and edting is a must-have by now. So far i used an Mac mini M2 with 8GB Ram and 256 GB SSD for my editing, but especially with bigger raw files/more effects, it started to get laggy as well.

Thus I'm searching for a new setup, that i can do all the editing with and travel with it.

Im from Germany, my budget is around 1000€ and MacBooks i had a closer look at were:

Mac Price
MacBook Air M5 16 GB / 512 GB / 10CPU + 8GPU 1079€
MacBook Air M4 24 GB / 512GB / 10CPU + 10GPU 1099€
MacBook Air M4 16 GB / 256GB / 10CPU + 10GPU 999€
MacBook Air M4 16 GB / 256GB / 10CPU + 8GPU 859€
MacBook Pro M1Pro 16 GB / 512GB / 10CPU + 10GPU used at around 1100€

I'm totally up for any other suggestions or feedback of any kind 😉.

Thanks

You get one camera setup for a year of travel — what are you taking?

Hi there! 👋

I'm in the lucky position of planning a solo world trip, and I'm currently trying to lock in my camera setup. After going back and forth for a while, I still can't quite make a final decision on my main camera and lenses – so I figured I'd ask here.

My current gear:

  • Fuji X100VI
  • DJI Osmo Pocket 3 (could be sold if needed)
  • Sigma 10–18mm for Fuji (could be sold if needed)

What I'm going for:

My usage will be roughly 50% photo / 50% video. The primary goal is cinematic, high-quality travel footage – but since this will be my only camera, solid photo capability is a must as well. I'm not planning to post content on YouTube or anywhere else; this is purely for myself and my family to look back on.

My inspo were some creators whose style I'm going for (most of them are using some high end stuff, but thats way out of my budget 😉):

FF vs. APS-C:

Weight and size differences between full-frame and APS-C aren't a dealbreaker for me – but I'm genuinely unsure whether the quality boost from FF actually justifies the extra bulk and cost for a travel setup like this.

Budget:

Alright, let's talk money. It really hurts spending that much money, but my actual hard limit is somewhere around 3,000–3,500€ for the whole setup.

Setups I’m currently considering:

Camera Standard Zoom Wide Angle Total Price
X-H2s 2200€ Sigma 18-50 500€ Sigma 10-18 0€ ~2700€
X-H2s 2200€ Fuji 16-55 1300€ Sigma 10-18 0€ ~3400€
A6700 1189€ Sony E 16-55mm 799€ Sigma 10-18mm Used 599€ ~2600€
A7CII 1699 € Sony 24-70 GM I 1249€ Sigma 16-28 879€ ~3800€
A7CII 1699 € Sigma 28-70 679€ Sigma 16-28 879€ ~3200€
A7IV 2119 € Sony 24-70 GM I 1249€ Sigma 16-28 879€ ~4250€
A7IV 2119 € Sigma 28-70 679€ Sigma 16-28 879€ ~3700€

Most of the prices are for new gear, but i'm totally up for saving some money by buying used, provided that i can find suitable offers somewhere.

Honorable mentions also to the X-S20 that came across my research.

Puhh, longer than i expected 🫣

Would love to hear what you’d pick - or if there’s something I’m overlooking 🙌

Hi everyone,

I’m currently struggling with a big decision and would really appreciate some other perspectives.

I’m 23 years old and working in Germany as a biological technical assistant. I’ve been in my current job since 2023. The job itself is quite routine, but it offers a good work-life balance, a lot of flexibility when it comes to vacation time, good colleagues, so all in all I'd say a pretty decent job. The downside is that the pay and long-term career prospects in this field are rather limited.

For a while now, I’ve been planning a one-year world trip. The planning is already quite advanced and I’ve already quit my job, bought all vaccines told everyone and bought some gear. Financially, I’m in a relatively stable position: I have enough liquid savings to fully cover the trip (around 20–25k €), and I also have about 60-70k € invested which I do not plan to touch.

My plan after the trip would likely be to either go back to work in Germany to rebuild some savings or possibly start studying (either full-time or alongside the job). I currently still live with my parents, so I would have a relatively low financial burden when I return. However, I would like to move out after the trip.

Despite all of this, I’ve recently started to have doubts.

One concern is the financial aspect. It’s not just the travel cost itself, but also the income I’m giving up (around 45k € gross for the year). I can’t help but think about how this money could contribute to long-term goals like buying or building a house, even though I’m aware that my current career path might make that difficult anyway.

Another concern is the length of the trip. One year feels like a very long time to be away, and I’m unsure if I’m maybe overcommitting. At the same time, I’ve planned the route in a way that aligns with seasons and specific highlights, so shortening the trip feels like I would miss out on things that are important to me. Travelling solo never been a problem, as i like being alone and being more on the introverted site. On the other hand, 1 year again is a pretty long time, for being separated from your family and friends.

I’ve also been questioning my motivation. Part of me genuinely wants to experience the world, different cultures, and get out of my current routine. But I can’t fully tell if this desire is coming from within, or if it’s partly influenced by social media, societal expectations, or the common “you’ll regret not traveling” narrative.

I do enjoy the idea of documenting the trip through photos and videos, mainly for myself and my family, but I also can’t deny that some part of me might care about how others perceive it.

I guess what I’m really struggling with is this:
From a rational standpoint, the trip seems doable. But emotionally, I’m worried about making the wrong decision - either by going and “losing” time and money, or by not going and regretting it later.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation or had similar doubts before a long trip? How did it turn out for you?

I’d really appreciate honest perspectives, even if they’re critical.

Thanks a lot.
