Fun Ideas that would make MKW more engaging
I've been playing Mario Kart World for around 400 hours now and while I still hop on Knockout Tour just to kill some time, I can't help but feel like Nintendo left so much potential on the table. The open world was amazing at first, but once you get used to it, races start feeling like regular Mario Kart again. The tracks are long, but not much really happens throughout them. So I started thinking of a few ideas / items that I genuinely think could make races feel way more dynamic and memorable.
- Grappling Vine
A Grappling Vine item that lets you hook onto another racer and instantly swap positions with them. The racer you hook gets stalled for a brief moment because their momentum gets broken from being pulled backwards, while you take over their position. It would be a really fun comeback item that rewards good timing instead of just throwing another projectile.
- Berserk Shell
A Berserk Shell that works as a much more chaotic version of the Blue Shell. Instead of flying straight through the middle of the track, it stays on the ground and actively seeks out nearby racers in a completely unpredictable zig-zag pattern as it makes its way to 1st place. The further back the player is that gets the item, the more aggressive it becomes on its way forward. It would still eventually reach 1st place, but everyone in the race has to deal with it instead of only 1st place. I'd also make it look completely different from the Blue Shell. A pearlescent purple and red shell with curved spikes instead of straight ones to make it look unstable and berserk.
- Mid-Race Bosses
Imagine bosses randomly appearing in the middle of certain tracks. A giant Coin Coffer, Phantom Bowser, Petey Piranha, King Boo, stuff like that. If you happen to have items like Triple Green Shells, Fire Flowers or anything that can deal multiple hits quickly, you can defeat the boss while still racing. Whoever lands the finishing blow gets that boss' special item.
For example:
Coin Coffer: Grants a temporary third item slot until you use that extra item.
Phantom Bowser: Gives you one giant fireball projectile that eventually breaks apart into multiple smaller fireballs once it reaches its maximum distance.
Boom Boom: We already got giant enemies like Boom Boom that can spawn in tracks, but imagine defeating one of them and gaining their spinning power? Having his power would summon giant fists that spins around your Kart as an AoE attack to nearby racers, lasting 3-5 seconds.
I love the idea of rewarding quick thinking instead of just driving through another item box.
- Coin Pit Stops
Coins are everywhere in Mario Kart World, but after a while you're mostly collecting them just because they're there. I'd love to see pit stop buildings on the side of the road, kind of like the food stands already in the game.
Each pit stop would have an LCD screen showing one item that's available there and how many coins it costs. Since races are capped at 20 coins, the most expensive item would naturally cost 20.
For example:
Golden Mushroom: 20 Coins
Super Horn: 18 Coins
Triple Red Shells: 15 Coins
You'd actually have to drive through the pit stop to buy the item, spending your coins in exchange for something guaranteed instead of relying entirely on RNG. It would make coins feel like an actual resource instead of just a speed stat, and it'd be especially useful for someone in 1st place who wants to cash in their coins for protection instead of simply sitting at the cap.
I know Mario Kart has always been about accessibility, but I feel like ideas like these would make races create way more memorable moments without making the game overly complicated. They all reward quick decisions during the race instead of just adding more random chaos. But giving it some engagement just like how they're doing it for Splatoon 3 for example will keep things interesting and fresh.
My favorite shortcut to take
one of my fav shortcuts to take, cause you can very easily miss the jump into the shortcut, the part where you latch onto the wall and it can mess you up so bad, cause the grey terrain is very slow to drive on. But very thrilling when it works!
