I'm an absolute beginner and need clarification here.

I can understand that my move is a blunder, but I don't get why B8 is the best move here. In the discussion someone already tried to briefly explain it, that there is a Ko at D5, a potential seki, but I don't quite get it yet and the longer I analyze this position with the engine (only the weak free version so maybe that contributes) the weirder it gets.
If I play at B8 the ai wants to play H8 and then ok I get that my group survives so lets disregard that.
If I play B8 and white captures on A8 then I have to play at G8 and from there i can apparently surround white like this,
but isn't that also the case when I directly play at G8 instead of B8? Tried it and then engine plays at B8 instead and apparently then my corner is dead?
Somehow playing at B8 seems to be necessary and I fail to truly grasp why. Maybe there is some simple way of explaining it?
