Hey i recently figured out that Milan Zonneveld is the only hope for Dutch football in the next 10 years and I’ve coincidentally chosen to support Sparta Rotterdam. What’s our history? What titles have we won? Is there an Ajax Rotterdam?
Im not from the Netherlands but i have been cheering for you guys on every major tournament since 2010. Netherlands arguably has not had an elite striker since Van Persie got old/retired. I suppose Depay was serviceable for a while, but by now he is definitely washed. So who is left? Malen? I view him as more of a winger. Brobbey? Perhaps, i would definitely start him over Depay/Malen but he is average at best and a bit of a loose cannon. I think the risk of him taking a random stupid red card in the knockouts is too high. Weghorst? I like him but he definitely cant start and play 90 minutes, he is the joker you throw in late in the game when you need a goal. So who is the answer? Enter Milan Zonneveld
My extensive research into top Eredivisie scorers revealed that he is currently the best option available. He managed 6 goals in the Eredivisie last season while playing for subpar/bad teams. Now yeah, he probably has the first touch of a grandma and couldnt make a simple 5m pass to save his life, but neither can Depay and atleast Zonneveld doesn't need to. He is 22, 198cm, a very strong and physical player. All he needs to do is wrestle with the opposition defenders and win headers. His holdup play and the space he is going to create with his presence will let players like Gakpo, Gravenberch, Summerville and Malen shine. And if you need a goal in the last 20-30 minutes, you throw in Weghorst. Heck, if you really want to cook, sub out a defender and play them both.
Zonneveld needs to be on the plane to USA NOW. I understand its not easy to swap players out once the tournament has begun, but i believe it is permitted in case of serious injuries ( definitely when its a goalkeeper ). With enough motivation there is surely a way and Netherlands wont win the world cup with the current striker situation. If any of you reading have contacts to the Dutch NT team, use them. This NEEDS to happen.
