Taking the Triumph Scrambler 400 X to Ladakh: How Did It Actually Perform?

This year I took my Scrambler 400x to the rugged terrains of Ladakh. This 7000 km journey was nothing but an absolute adventure, thanks to the incredible motorcycle that Bajaj has produced.

On the highway the bike just punches through everything on its path. The 15T front sprocket upgrade shines at the top end of the speed. I was effortlessly cruising at 110-120 kmph all day long.

Naturally, you do feel a drop in outright punch once you cross 14,000+ feet (like Taglang La or Khardung La)—physics is physics. You have to work the 6-speed gearbox a bit more and keep it in the sweet spot, but it never left me stranded or gasping for power.

Suspension and off-road handling: The suspension took a beating on the Shyok valley route but kept on going nevertheless.

  • This is where the Scrambler truly earns its name. The longer-travel suspension soaked up hidden potholes, sharp shale stones, and water-logged slush streams with absolute composure.
  • Because it's significantly lighter than a full-size 200kg+ adventure bike, flicking it through loose gravel or catching a slide was infinitely less intimidating. If the rear stepped out, body weight management and a dab of the boot were enough to correct it.

The pain points:

  • Fuel Range: The 13-litre tank is the bike’s biggest Achilles heel for remote touring. While it gives decent efficiency, stretches like the ones between Leh and Pang/Karu require careful planning. Pro-tip: Always carry a secondary fuel jerry can or bottles for remote sectors.
  • Brakes: The stock organic pads are okay for normal road use, but on steep, loose descents, they lack that sharp, immediate bite. I upgraded to 66bhp sintered brake pads for that spot on bite and the brakes did not disappoint.
  • Ground Clearance: While manageable, you have to be mindful of heavy underbelly hits on massive hidden rocks compared to a dedicated high-clearance rally bike. My bike was hit at the bottom a few times on the shyok valley route

The Verdict:

Is the bike a capable off-roader? No, but it's an absolute blast to ride it on the rugged terrains of Ladakh. It turns a grueling high-altitude trip into a fun, manageable adventure without breaking your back picking up a heavy tank.

If you want to see how it handled specific challenges like water crossings, slippery slush, and steep climbs, I documented the entire journey on my YouTube channel below:

This is the first video of the journey. Please check out the entire playlist for complete entertainment.

I’d love to chat—has anyone else taken a smaller-displacement modern classic or scrambler up to Ladakh? How did your machine hold up against the thin air? Drop your thoughts below!
