What would be better/safer for winter riding? Sidecar or custom retractable skis.

Hi guys I may be in a situation where I will be daily driving my motorcycle, year round. For context, I live in Alaska so in the winter the roads can be very hazardous. I.e no salt on the roads and they can be very icy and bumpy with compacted snow. Oh and I ride a Suzuki DR650.

What would be safer for cornering and general stability on the sketchy roads? I will most likely be doing all the fabrication myself so I can make either system to my liking. Skis I think would be safer in general but a sidecar would allow me to stow extra things much easier, like gear or groceries.

Obviously I would stud my tires and drop the air pressure a little to get good contact with the road. And I know I would have to significantly change my riding technique with either system, which is fine. But would I even be able to safely ride at highway speeds? I wouldn't want to be holding up traffic everywhere I go.

Thanks!

Anyone freeze dried seitan before?

I want to stash up on some freeze dried meals so I can live out my car for a while. I want to add seitan to meals but I'm curious if it would freeze dry and rehydrate/heat up well. Thanks!

Is firefighting a bad choice for me?

I'm transitioning out of the military soon and I'm having an extremely difficult time trying to decide what career to pursue. One of the things I dislike the most about being in the military is being told what to do and bitched at by leaders that I don't respect. I don't have an issue with being told what to do in general, because I can acknowledge the importance of a leader. But when I have zero respect for the leader because they're terrible at leading and hypocritical and I just have to take it on the chin. Basically I desire autonomy. Is this something that I would experience in Fire/EMS?

I can compartmentalize the BS but it gets to the point where it starts to eat away at me. If you dislike your coworkers/superiors can you ask to be put on a different shift or are you just stuck?

Of course there's shitty coworkers and leaders in every profession but in the first responder world they have a little more control over your life. I feel like I'm very passionate about Fire/EMS but I don't want to be unhappy like I am now.

Freelance surveyors?

Hey, just wondering if there are any freelance surveyors out there and if it's a realistic option within the industry? Or could there be more opportunities for it in the future with the increasing need for surveyors? I'm interested in surveying but I don't really want to be tied to a company or a set work schedule. How realistic would it be for me to drive around the US and work for different companies, basically just taking contracts whenever I want to work/need money. I know I would need to get some solid work experience with a permanent job first, but say after I have 5+ YoE, a Geomatics degree, and a PLS.

I'm just trying to find a career that would allow me to have the lifestyle I'm looking for and I'm pretty stuck between surveying and firefighting. I really like the schedule that firefighters have. I'm also separating out of the military and I really feel like I'm going to miss the camaraderie, which doesn't really exist in the civilian world outside of first responders. I know volunteer firefighting is an option but I would rather just choose one career.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your time

Any heel-toe shifters?

I can't ever seem to do it with our floor mounted accelerators. Wondering if anyone has a technique for it. It feels very awkward rolling my foot all the way over and I usually end up slamming the brakes..

Can I get a job later in the season/year?

I have some interest in Wildland FF but I also have other career interests. For example, after working a summer job in AK, could I travel to the lower 48 to work as a Wildland FF until my summer job starts again? I assume all of the job postings for public agencies would be long gone by September/October? Could I still get a job with a private company?

Thanks
