Detroit Area Women Learn Firearms Safety and Basics - for Free!

I just saw the reporting on this recent event in Detroit, and couldn’t help but notice that the vast majority of attendees were women of color. Since women of color tend to be and vote democratic, and certainly be more liberal than a typical collection of women who are not of color, I thought this was an amazing opportunity to convey the benefits of firearms knowledge to a demographic who might not otherwise have any background in the topic. We need greater numbers of women who see the value in being knowledgeable, and ideally experienced with, the safe use of firearms.

* Yes, I know there were NRA and other Fudd-oriented organizers and funders behind this event, but the knowledge these women take away would seem to be worth any potential “negative exposures”, right?

SHTF Scenario Hunting Rifle in .308 (7.62x51mm) - AR or Bolt-action?

The only thing I don't have in my semi-rural, high-desert, bug-in SHTF collection is a 7.62x51 (.308). I already have two AR-15 type 5.56mm rifles, a Mossberg 590 12g 18.5", plenty of semi-auto pistols (mostly 9mm), but if I wanted to reach out and touch some game (deer-sized) beyond 200 yds, which is better, a Ruger SFAR or Ruger American Gen II, for example? Budget: <$1500 w/ modest optic.

Tee-hee-hee, it’s Taurusaturday - Cleaned & Upgraded

AZ Taurus fangirl here. Occasional CCW, full-time home defense.

G3C (3.2”) came first of the two, last year. No optic cut. Shoots reliably and comfortably for me. Just a little snappy. But good enough for quick 5-shot 3-4” circles at 7 yds.

G3 (4.0”) came next, with optic cut, and rare factory slide cuts I thought looked cool. Nice shooter. Less snappy than the G3C.

Yeah, I like my manual safeties, and drill with them during dry fire at home and live range fire.

Today, after cleaning both…

On the G3C, I installed a Lakeline 3.5” stainless ported barrel and Lakeline stainless recoil assembly. The goal is less snappiness and maybe better accuracy.

On the G3 full-size, I installed a Lakeline 4.7” stainless threaded barrel w/ thread protector, and Lakeline stainless recoil assembly. The goal is prep for a comp and someday a can. A girl can dream.

Monday is a short range session to test my changes. Will report results after…

Why do this to Taurus budget pistols?

Because anyone can go out and drop $600-1000 for some higher brand all pre-packaged. I like to be a part of my creations. Everything I bought, both pistols and all accessories, were deeply discounted following many hours of “never-pay-retail” online shopping therapy. Maybe $750 all in, for both, as you see them here, over a year. Fun times!

I also have a TX22 Competition that really rocks. It also got cleaned today.

Lots of other fun pew-pews, including some name brands, in my safe, over half since Nov 2024. Go figure.

My Gateway Gun - Wanna share yours?

When I was around 7 or 8 years old, I was obsessed with the Johnny Eagle gun sets by Topper. My parents thought I was just in a “tomboy phase” and finally relented, receiving the Johnny Eagle “Magumba” African safari set for Christmas. Somehow, I still have the pistol in working order, although the bolt action rifle sadly broke and went to the landfill long ago.

What was your “gateway” gun?

This baseball in a plastic cube container was given to me was given to me by the father of a woman I was seeing casually back in 2010 in Phoenix.

Thursday - Song Day (“Big Iron”) Marty Robbins

Yes, Sunday is probably better for Song Day, and I realize the “s” in thurSday is doing a lot of tortured heavy lifting here, but…

I was learning “Big Iron” (by Marty Robbins) on guitar last night, which put me in mind of my Ruger New Model Blackhawk .30 carbine (with an RDS on a short Pic rail in place of its factory adjustable rear sight.)

In the song, I’m sure the ranger had something even more powerful in mind, whereas when my shooting friends in the ‘80’s were buying .44 and .357 pistolas, I just had to be different…

Enjoy “Big Iron”… by Marty Robbins

To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came ridin' from the south side, slowly lookin' all around
"He's an outlaw loose and runnin', " came the whisper from each lip
"He's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip"
Big iron on his hip

In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
He was vicious and a killer, though a youth of twenty-four
And the notches on his pistol numbered one and nineteen more
One and nineteen more
Now the stranger started talkin', made it plain to folks around
He was an Arizona Ranger, wouldn't be too long in town
He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead
He said it didn't matter, he was after Texas Red
After Texas Red
Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red
But the outlaw didn't worry, men that tried before were dead
Twenty men had tried to take him, twenty men had made a slip
Twenty-one would be the Ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

The morning passed so quickly, it was time for them to meet
It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street
Folks were watchin' from the windows, everybody held their breath
They knew this handsome Ranger was about to meet his death
'Bout to meet his death
There was forty feet between them when they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the Ranger is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather, for a bullet fairly ripped
And the Ranger's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered 'round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh, he might have went on livin', but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
Big iron, big iron
When he tried to match the Ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip

Happy 13th Purrday, Cali - My Furst Cat!

Cali is 13 today.
Now living her best life, still owning the household as alpha, despite being quite happily toothless for two years now since total tooth-ectomy following stomatitis diagnosis, with younger sister calico Caramel, same age sister tiny gray tiger tabby Casey, and still somewhat grudgingly with sister void Charcoal (indoor-outdoor vixen).

After sending her last hooman child off to college, Ms. Spouse selected Cali in August 2013 to be “my” first cat over my protestations of getting ANY cat, let alone a 3-mo old kitten. Took me about a week to fall in love, and now here we are of course.

Happy Purr-day, Cali!

3 hours live!

Just excited that our PW3 system is finally online for us with existing 7kw Solar City rooftop system , giving us automatic and on-demand battery backup here in north central AZ.

Now to lurk here and learn what we can about tweaking the system for optimal backup capacity and least $’s to the utility grid, who wasted four months in bureaucratic nonsense delaying our connection for what was a pretty standard engineering design.

Saving the planet one kilowatt at a time…
