What is it like living in Dresden (Germany)?

I am considering moving to Dresden next year to start my PhD and wanted to know what the general living situation is in the city.

Since I am a member of the LGBT+ community, I would also like to know how progressive the city is. I heard the stereotype of people saying that the city is more conservative due to being eastern Germany, but I wanna know from people who actually live there or lived there before.

Thank you 😊

My Leviathan Design Tier List

My thoughts on the leviathans based solely on their design.

Ghost Leviathan: Scary yet incredibly pretty. I love its bioluminescence and translucent texture. The addition of the inner body is a great touch.

Ventgarden: Very pretty. I love the small ornaments in its design like the yellow eyes and the reddish comb structures you see when entering it.

Reefback: Iconic appearance. Perfect design to convey whale but alien.

Collector: Definitely my fave from SN2. It looks familiar enough yet also incredibly alien. As a big lover of cephalopods in general, this guy was made for me.

Sea Treader: I will always defend you. This guy looks perfectly alien yet also plausible. I like the choice of making its front "leg" actually its snout.

Shadow Leviathan: Intimidating design and also pretty. Usually I hate mixing vertebrate and invertebrate features but this guy does it right. My only gripe is that its design and coloration would’ve been a better fit for a more open and darker area.

Ice Worm: Pretty basic design but the glowing horn and the three parted jaws save it for me. Not my favorite but interesting nonetheless.

Void Chelicerate: Looks like a shrimp crossed with a solifuge. I really like the rotten, zombified look of this version and prefer it to the red chelicerate. Similar to the shadow leviathan, this guy would’ve aesthetically fit better into another biome.

Reaper: The most iconic design and still holds up today. My only gripe is that it’s mandibles look wonky on its head and that its face looks a little too human for me, almost entering uncanny valley.

Chelicerate: Pretty cool but not the best. I prefer the void version‘s look as this one looks like it got cooked a little too long.

Deepwing Brooder: Very unique. But honestly I al kinda confused with this one. It has a beak, but then also eyes below its main body? And then its body is somewhat ray shaped… It’s an interesting combo for sure but not aesthetically pleasing imo.

Coral Crab: Basic crab. No notes.

Glow Whale: Whale but glowy. Very basic but doesn’t have any issues.

Great Jaw: Big clam. I like the addition of the eyes on the inside of the shell but design wise pretty unremarkable otherwise.

Frozen Leviathan: Not my favorite. Looks like gamera from wish. Its fine but its design doesn’t excite me.

Ancient Floater: Just a big ass floater. Not as creative as the others.

Shiver Leviathan: This one will be controversial. Something about its design bothers me a bit. It looks like a skull crawler made love to a plane and this amalgamation was the result. I am also not the biggest fan of its jaws being made off elongated curved teeth. This thing looks more like an SCP than an actual lifeform.

Sea Dragon and Emperor: I am not a fan of mixing vertebrate and invertebrate features. These two look more like mythical creatures than plausible alien lifeforms. They are not ugly per se but they just look a little wonky to me. The sea emperor is slightly better imo since its frontal body doesn’t clash as much with the tentacles imo.

For the other three we don’t know their full canon designs. For the world tree we will eventually get it but for now, I put it here.

Little Rant

I absolutely love the Subnautica universe and this franchise is one of my all time favorites. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to give and hear criticism. Don’t take this post too seriously, I’m not bashing on the Devs.

As a biology nerd I am somewhat disappointed that a lot of common adaptations found here on earth don’t exist in any game or haven’t been used to full potential. Examples for this include camouflage, mimicry and the usage of venom/poison. These three are staples on earth but rarely ever appear in the games.

The closest we got to a camouflaging animal are probably the spiky traps. Most other creatures have the right colors but move around so much that camouflage is useless, if they stick out like a sore thumb.

Mimicry would be awesome. Imagine a carnivore that mimics a herbivore so you would feel safe around them, only to be surprised by it.

And venom/poison usage is the biggest offender. It’s extremely wide spread on earth but with the exception of a few acids and the toxic sponge, is not really used. Some animals should evolve venomous bites or poisonous flesh. (And not just for the PDA like the rays but as an actual game mechanic.)

On the other hand there are a ridiculous amount of lifeforms that use electricity in some way, an adaptation relatively rare on earth. We have Ampeels, Drooping Stingers, Crabsquids, Squidsharks, Eye Jellies, Mimic Pylons, Twin Sitarays, the electric Geordie and the Surge Jelly. I might habe forgot something but you get the idea.

Databank Errors

Some of the databank entries of the lifeforms seem to be in the wrong places.

  • the Needler Mango is in the fish tab and not the Mango tab
  • the Houndgar and Bullethead are in the fish tab, despite being cephalopods; they along with the Collector should be moved to the mollusk tab
  • all the crustaceans should be in the arthropod tab

These are just tiny issues but as someone who likes to categorize things neatly, it bothers me.
