What Does Iron Do For Lawns?

What Does Iron Do For Lawns?

Are you looking for a way to help keep your lawn looking green as we head into the cooler months? Using an iron-based product on your lawn will help improve your lawn's colour and strength, especially when heading into or out of dormancy.

Iron works by helping your grass better photosynthesise and create chlorophyll, which helps the plant better carry out cellular functions. Improving the strength of your lawn by applying iron also helps limit the impact of frost and helps your lawn become more disease-resistant.

When it comes to applying iron to your lawn, our go to product is Iron Guard Plus - safe for use on all turf types. When applying iron to your lawn, it is best to avoid applying in the heat of the day, ensure your lawn is healthy and not stressed before application.

Earthworms and Your Lawn

https://preview.redd.it/hf3ssptxi62h1.jpg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1ab936a3ac8f7925642d39e414c181a97334b02

Noticed little mud balls on your lawn lately? These are earthworm castings, messy at times, but a sign of healthy soil. While they can be annoying on short cut lawns, we don’t recommend treating them. With a little patience and as weather conditions change, they’ll naturally disappear.

When conditions are wet, and the soil becomes saturated, earthworms will rise up to the surface to breathe as there is less air in the soil profile. When they reach the surface, they will leave behind little piles of dirt, also known as "castings".

While these castings might not be the most aesthetically appealing thing to look at, having earthworms in your soil is essential for your lawns health. Earthworms are beneficial because they help aerate your soil, break down thatch, increase decomposition, and create usable nitrogen in the soil. As earthworms have an abundance of benefits for your lawn, we do not recommend removing them.

How can you help limit soil castings:

  • Give the soil castings a quick blast with a hose and wash the soil back into the turf profile.
  • When the soil is dry, rake or brush castings back into the soil profile.
  • As worm activity is a sign of higher moisture levels, you can limit the amount of water your lawn is receiving to try to lessen their activity.
  • Mow your lawn on a higher cut setting to help lessen the appearance.

Preparing Your Lawn For Winter

As we head into the cooler months of the year, there are a few things you can do now to help prepare your lawn for the cooler months ahead.

Fertiliser Application:

If you haven't applied a fertiliser to your lawn after summer, now is an ideal time to give your lawn a boost in nutrients, before your lawn heads into winter. If temperatures are still warm in your location and your lawn is still actively growing, look at using a granular fertiliser like Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser. If the temperatures have already started to cool down near you, and your lawn has started to grow at a slower rate, using a liquid fertiliser like Exceed that is absorbed by the leaf of the grass will provide a much quicker uptake in nutrients.

Do I Need to Apply Iron?

If you are looking to help maximise your lawn's colour and improve its strength, using an iron-based product like Iron Guard Plus is ideal.

Applying Pre-Emergents in Autumn:

Now is also an ideal time to get on the front foot in preventing weeds in your lawn. Using a pre-emergent herbicide like Oxafert will help prevent weed seedlings from germinating before they have a chance to grow and spread throughout your lawn.

Is It Important to Mow Reguarly in Autumn and Winter?

As grass growth slows over the coming weeks, you won’t need to mow as often. Continue mowing regularly enough so that no more than one-third of the leaf is removed at a time.

How to Remove Clover From Your Lawn

Clover is a common broadleaf weed that you may have spotted in your lawn, and it can easily be identified by:

  • Oval-shaped leaves.
  • Leaves will commonly grow in 3 leaflets (4 if you're lucky!)
  • White circular markings across all the leaves in the leaflet.
  • Creeping stem
  • White or pink flower, depending on the exact species.

Clover Removal:

If you do happen to have this weed growing in your lawn, the best and easiest way to remove it is with a broadleaf herbicide like All Purpose Weed Control or Estate Herbicide.

  • All Purpose Weed Control - comes in an easy to use hose on bottle. Safe for use on most common lawn types, including soft leaf buffalo, couch, kikuyu, zoysia, rye and fescue.
  • Estate Herbicide - comes in a concentrate, best applied with a knapsack or pressure sprayer. Safe for use on most lawn types.

Both of these products are available for purchase on the Lawn Solutions Lawn Store:

All Purpose Weed Control - https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au/shop/default/buffalo-weed-control.html

Estate Herbicide - https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au/shop/default/estate-herbicide-250ml-concentrate.html

If clover is an ongoing issue and keeps returning, this may be a sign that your soil has low nitrogen levels, so a fertiliser application may be needed. When it comes to applying a fertiliser to your lawn, we recommend using our Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser (ideal for use on all lawn types. https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au/shop/default/sir-walter-premium-lawn-fertiliser-10kg.html
