Laying turf in winter?

Handover for our new build is in the first two weeks of June, couple of issues… our entire yard is clay and is quite muddy, slippery, and sticky when wet.

We also have a dog who will need to regularly go outside to go potty and I REALLY don’t want dirt and mud all over our brand new house.

What precautions should I take if I’m going to lay grass during winter?

I’m looking at Sir Walter Buffalo because I’ve heard it’s the preferred for homes with furry things that like to run laps around the yard. Is this a good choice?

Edit: based in regional VIC

What to do to fill in areas around new concrete path

Looking for advice on what to do next. I need to fill in low points around newly laid concrete path as it currently is a safety hazard (for rolled ankles) the way it is. Which products do I use to fill/build up layers in each sides before laying instant turf over the top? Any detailed advice would be appreciated! Located in Victoria

Advice needed

Laid this back in November. Xenon. Has been hit with granular fert. Recently as it took a while to root with the little amount of rain we have had in West GA. Lawn care company says fungus? They just started treating the back yard last month due to the age of the grass and date laid. Any advice much appreciated. I do water 3X a week. Mostly at dusk.

Small holes in lawn

Does anyone know why this is happening to my lawn and what I can do to prevent it?

For about a month, I’ve seen small holes all over the lawn possibly left by a small bird.

The holes are quite round and shallow. Not sure whether it’s due to a recent lawn renovation in early autumn and whatever it is, is trying to get to the sand layer? We’ve been in the house and haven’t experienced this in the 6 years since living here in eastern Melbourne. Thanks for your help.

Pest attacking lawn? Australian Autumn

Hello

I am in Adelaide, South Australia and in April I noticed my lawn start to die with millions of little dead tufts of grass sitting on the surface (Australian Autumn). Within a matter of weeks it devastated my lawn as per the pics. I have applied 3 doses of Bifenthrin spaced a week apart. There may be slight improvement but still seeing new dead tufts and dead patches of lawn (applied chemical generously to all of lawn not just affected areas). Maybe its just carry over lawn dying after killing pest. Other curious thing is if I dig into soil I cant see any dead or alive beetle/worm/larvae. Any advice/thoughts?

New lawn

I put new topsoil and used Jonathan Green Black beauty seed. This is 5 weeks post spreading I applied magical and starter fertilizer at the same time.
I’m hosting a graduation party @ the end of June and hoping this will fill in decently by then.
Should I be reseeding the more bare spots with annual to get it to thicken up or is it going to fill in? I’m in ct and have mowed it twice. It’s growing well where there is grass but it seems to be patchy.

Winter green couch dead patch (Gold Coast)

We put this Wintergreen Couch turf in our backyard in December. Around the start of April the patch died and I can’t think of any obvious reason?

We’re Gold Coast based, it’s essentially north facing. It’s all got a fair amount of soil underneath. There was a dry week where all of the lawn wouldn’t have had much rain however the rest of the lawn has survived.

Anyone seen this before? Or have any suggestions?

How to Remove Clover From Your Lawn

Clover is a common broadleaf weed that you may have spotted in your lawn, and it can easily be identified by:

  • Oval-shaped leaves.
  • Leaves will commonly grow in 3 leaflets (4 if you're lucky!)
  • White circular markings across all the leaves in the leaflet.
  • Creeping stem
  • White or pink flower, depending on the exact species.

Clover Removal:

If you do happen to have this weed growing in your lawn, the best and easiest way to remove it is with a broadleaf herbicide like All Purpose Weed Control or Estate Herbicide.

  • All Purpose Weed Control - comes in an easy to use hose on bottle. Safe for use on most common lawn types, including soft leaf buffalo, couch, kikuyu, zoysia, rye and fescue.
  • Estate Herbicide - comes in a concentrate, best applied with a knapsack or pressure sprayer. Safe for use on most lawn types.

Both of these products are available for purchase on the Lawn Solutions Lawn Store:

All Purpose Weed Control - https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au/shop/default/buffalo-weed-control.html

Estate Herbicide - https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au/shop/default/estate-herbicide-250ml-concentrate.html

If clover is an ongoing issue and keeps returning, this may be a sign that your soil has low nitrogen levels, so a fertiliser application may be needed. When it comes to applying a fertiliser to your lawn, we recommend using our Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser (ideal for use on all lawn types. https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au/shop/default/sir-walter-premium-lawn-fertiliser-10kg.html

Preparing Your Lawn For Winter

As we head into the cooler months of the year, there are a few things you can do now to help prepare your lawn for the cooler months ahead.

Fertiliser Application:

If you haven't applied a fertiliser to your lawn after summer, now is an ideal time to give your lawn a boost in nutrients, before your lawn heads into winter. If temperatures are still warm in your location and your lawn is still actively growing, look at using a granular fertiliser like Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser. If the temperatures have already started to cool down near you, and your lawn has started to grow at a slower rate, using a liquid fertiliser like Exceed that is absorbed by the leaf of the grass will provide a much quicker uptake in nutrients.

Do I Need to Apply Iron?

If you are looking to help maximise your lawn's colour and improve its strength, using an iron-based product like Iron Guard Plus is ideal.

Applying Pre-Emergents in Autumn:

Now is also an ideal time to get on the front foot in preventing weeds in your lawn. Using a pre-emergent herbicide like Oxafert will help prevent weed seedlings from germinating before they have a chance to grow and spread throughout your lawn.

Is It Important to Mow Reguarly in Autumn and Winter?

As grass growth slows over the coming weeks, you won’t need to mow as often. Continue mowing regularly enough so that no more than one-third of the leaf is removed at a time.

Sprayed with glysophate to kill Lesser Celadine which invaded the grass for the third year the first year I spot sprayed, but obviously did not get all of it came back with a vengeance this year. Lesser Celadine starts growing in early March and it is difficult to spray have to have temperatures close to 60°. It is very invasive. It started in the woods and I tried to spray along my fence line have gotten different opinions. Should we till or use aeration and reseed or just wait until next year and see if it pops up again, obviously we will have to spray again because different weeds will come up this summer. The yard is compacted not sure if it’s ever been aerated. Not sure if.Tilling will spread the tubers if not completely dead. If we do use grass seed, which is the best it probably only gets about four hours of sun many large trees. Three dogs one likes to play ball for a half hour at a time. Will fence off the part that is reseeded if we do that

Grubs,fertiliser application, winter dormancy?

Does anyone know what's causing this recent browning?

The turf was laid in December and took really well. It's been vibrant green and growing nicely up until a few weeks ago.

I applied some buffalo slow-release fertiliser from Bunnings and I'm worried that could have done it. But not sure why. Could I have applied too much?
