Hi Guys, Lawn Seed Suggestions

Hi guys, I’m currently in a small townhouse with a small yard with couch. Recently part of the couch has died off in a small corner section that doesn’t get any sunlight at all. The other issue I’m having is the soil is clay and when it rains the water stays on for weeks to the point where it starts getting that green moss. What grass would do well with little to no sunlight and still look similar to couch?

Cheers in advance.

Looking for some advice on getting my lawn back into decent shape

Ive recently moved in and the lawn is pretty patchy with lots of brown areas, weeds and random clumps of greener grass

Does anyone know what type of grass this is?
Is it worth trying to save, or would you start again?

What’s the best plan of attack? Weed first, fertilise, overseed, top dress, or something else?

I’m in Melbourne, any advice would be appreciated! 🙏

What do I have going on here?

No more renting! Finally have my own place and now trying to figure out what is going on in my little patch of lawn. I’m a complete noob when it comes to lawn knowledge/care so welcome any help.

1 & 2: is this buffalo?
3: winter grass?
4: marrow weed?
5,6 & 7: family member suggested kikuyu but I’m not so sure
8: is this the same as 5/6/7 or something different? It’s coming up in spots.
9: I’m not sure if it’s the same as 8 or whether it’s a very sparse and thin bladed part of 1 & 2, it’s off in a corner and look kind of different.

Thanks in advance!

Is this a fungal issue for my SWB?

Lots of dead grass, patches thinning out, and waterlogged areas. The roots don’t seem to be properly rooted down either in certain spots, and it’s been a year since laying.

Located Gold Coast, mostly sir Walter. Should I treat with Impala?

Is my tiftuf dying??

Melbourne based- weather hasn't been the best to mow. Last mow was a few weeks back. Is my tiftuf dying?? Anything I can do to save it?

What is this grass taking over my kikuyu and is there anything I can/should do about it?

For context, I live in Melbourne and this is a sort-of-isolated section of my lawn (technically connected to the rest, but via a section of dirt with little grass on it)

Any advice is much appreciated!

Buffalo assistance

Hi there,

Any ideas of how to fix the bare patches on my lawn (please see pictures).
I am located in Perth and had a lawn service come out and pray their formula down but there wasn’t a huge amount of change.
Our dog does use the grass to urinate and so I am happy to accept some yellow.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Backyard gets zero winter sun for 5 months — is real grass even possible?

South-facing backyard in Brisbane. House + alfresco block the sun from April through August. Most of the 8m-deep yard gets zero direct sun all winter.

Front yard is full sun — no issues there.

Backyard is the problem. Even Sir Walter Buffalo, would get almost no light on 80% of the yard for nearly half the year. I'm told the "shade tolerance" means ~3 hours of dappled light, not full building shade for months.

Anyone successfully run real grass in a yard that's in full building shade all winter?

How to fight back against Creeping Oxalis

Have you spotted this weed with heart shaped leaves growing in your lawn but not sure on what the best way to remove it is? Let's take a look at what creeping oxalis is and the best way to remove it when growing in your lawn.

Creeping Oxalis identifying features:

  • Small light green and purple heart shaped leaves.
  • Small bright yellow flowers - flowers contain 5 petals.
  • Runs along the soil surface and produces roots from the leaves as it spreads.
  • When seed pods mature they dry out and explode, causing the seed to spread

Creeping Oxalis removal:

If there is only a small amount of Creeping Oxalis present, the best and easiest way to remove it is to carefully pull it out by hand.

If the weed has become a bit more wide spread, a broadleaf herbicide like All Purpose Weed Control or Estate Herbicide may be required. After the weed has been sprayed, you should notice the weed starting to deteriorate 7-10 days after application. If the weed is still growing strong, a second application may be needed.

Creeping Oxalis prevention:

As this weed spreads by its seeds, stopping these seeds before they have a chance to grow in your lawn will help prevent its spread. A pre emergent herbicide like Oxafert or Barricade will create a barrier at the soil level which will affect the germination of any new seedlings, stopping the weed before it becomes visible in your lawn.

Long single grass throughout Buffalo

Long individual strands of these all throughout my sir walter buffalo. I pulled one out - see photo 2. Are they anything to worry about. Do I pull them all out by hand? Or should I apply something?

New homeowner with zero lawn care experience. Is this winter grass?

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased this property and it was rented out for a long time, so I’m not sure how well it was maintained. I have zero experience with lawn care and I’m trying to figure out where to start.
There are patches of grass growing much faster than the rest of the lawn, especially now in winter. Could this be winter grass or something else?
I’m in Sydney, NSW.
Any suggestions on how to revive this lawn would be greatly appreciated. What can I safely do now during winter, and what should I wait until spring/summer for?
Thank you so much.

Coalfalls clay survivors - my husband fought our 1,200m2 block for two years. Built a free lawn tracking app out of frustration. Posting because locals might find it useful.

We're on one of the older Queenslanders up in Coalfalls with a full 1,200m2 block. Posting because my husband isn't on Reddit and I figure locals on the same clay might get something out of this.

What happened to our lawn:

Curl grubs ate the root system. He treated with Acelepryn and the grubs died. But then he put Barricade pre-emergent down on the recovering lawn, not realising it stops every runner from establishing new roots. Killed his own recovery. $3k+ lesson.

We ripped the front yard out early 2025. Full soil prep on Coalfalls clay:

- pH test: 5.5-6.5 (typical for here)

- Gypsum at 200-500g per m2 to break clay aggregation

- Dolomite to raise pH and add magnesium

- Volcamine Zeolite at 1-2kg per m2 (permanent nutrient retention)

- LawnPride Under Turf Starter

Laid Sir Walter Buffalo DNA Certified. Cyclone Alfred hit three days later. It survived. Front verge is thriving now.

Why I'm posting here specifically:

My husband is a medically retired vet and his notes about what he applied were scattered everywhere. Different apps, notebooks, bags in the shed. He has cognitive decline from service so tracking this stuff across multiple places is genuinely hard. He started building a little app for himself to keep it all in one place.

I turned it into a real product. It's called LawnSuite, it's free, and you can use it right now in your phone browser without installing anything:

app.lawnsuite.com.au

lawnsuite.com.au

It's got 111 Australian products with real label rates, dosage calculator for your lawn area, BOM weather, treatment logging. Built for Australian conditions, not a US app with metric conversion.

Backyard is still dirt. Waiting on Stampede Buffalo to come out for the shaded 632m2 out the back.

Anyone else fighting Coalfalls clay? Would be good to know what's worked for people locally. Also happy to pass on anything my husband learnt the hard way if it saves someone the same mistakes.

What is it? Is it Grass? Weed? Do I pull it? Leave it?

First impression was a weed, I have long stringy bits of this crap everywhere, if i pull it out it has a decent length come out of the ground...

Grass burn

I am at a new home out west, and noticed that there is a lot of urine burn spots on the lawn. I don’t think all of them are from my bulldog, we have a ton of rabbits in the yard, and were only here for a couple of weeks atvthe beginning of April and a couple of weeks now. Either way, we need to minimize our dog’s urine spots. Has anyone had success in eliminating the acidity of the urine with supplements? She’s unfortunately not a huge water drinker, so her urine is more concentrated. Any advice would be appreciated!

Winter Lawn Care Do's & Don'ts

Are you unsure how to best care for your lawn this winter when its growth is slower? Let's take a look at what you should and shouldn't do...

Winter Lawn Care Do's:

  • Raise your mowing height. This will help ensure more of the leaf is present to absorb sunlight and nutrients.
  • If any weeds do happen to make their way through your lawn this winter, you can still treat and remove them now. No need to wait till spring for removal.
  • Look at getting your mower serviced, check over your mower's blades and look over your other lawn maintenance gear. Ensure it is ready to go once spring rolls around.

Winter Lawn Care Don'ts:

  • Don't start your lawn renovations now - best to wait till spring once your lawn has started to actively grow again.
  • If your lawn needs a boost in nutrients, we don't recommend using a granular fertiliser throughout winter. Granular fertilisers break down and dissolve in the soil when they come into contact with water, where the roots of your lawn can then absorb the nutrients. If your lawn has slowed in growth with the cooler weather, it won't be able to absorb the nutrients effectively. If you do need to give your lawn a nutrient boost in winter, we recommend using a liquid fertiliser that is absorbed by the leaf, like Exceed Liquid Fertiliser.
  • Water your lawn. For most regions of Australia, rainfall should cover the vast majority of your lawns' water requirements, and no additional water will be needed. Some telltale signs that your lawn needs additional water are a dry and wilted leaf or if the leaf curls up on itself.

Your Patch - Aussie lawn care app is finally live for Android

Hi all, off the back of my iOS Lawn Care app (which got a decent reception and has been downloaded 200+ times in the first week), I have been waiting for all the Google play stuff to clear (including the testers it needed for 14 days (thanks to my testers!)

It's finally live! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yourpatch.app

This is actually ahead on features than the iOS version now, as apple want you to be registered for GST just to make a lousy cent off some gated content. As always, most of the features here are free. There's no stored emails or sign up, and any analytics is anonymised.
