Rewatched Singam. Holds up surprisingly well imo.
Decided to take a trip of nostalgia with the whole Suriya comeback.
Hari ayya 🙏
Today we say many movies are edited like reels. Every 15-30 seconds we get a turning point. Hari is known for his fast screenplays and has done it so masterfully in this. Maybe if this came out today we would’ve said the same thing lol. This is probably his best work when it comes to that I feel.
And the action is enjoyable to watch. Most 2000s movies and prior my fam always feels like ayyo fightu bore-u. With the exception of some of the most iconic scenes ofcourse. And I too felt that once I grew up. But when watching here, the chase scenes and the gun fights in this are well made.
The one thing that felt off was Vivek’s comedy track. As a kid this was wammala ithaan da comedy. “Erimalai eppadi porukkum” laam enna maari comedy nu nenachitu iruntha. But now I gotta say it’s one of his weaker works. There are some nice ones but overall it’s meh.
Another word thrown around a lot these days. “World building” Story starts with Mayilvaganam. How big a don he is in Chennai. Then cuts to Dhurai singam who has his own backstory of how influential he is in his small town completely unrelated. Lowkey Master vibes 😂 I’m sure many movies were like this back then. But I felt compelled to juxtapose these two. The parallels are very similar.
The way the protagonist small town low ranking cop and antagonist big city gangster are made to cross paths. This is a quote-on-quote “underrated” screenplay that nobody appreciates. Or was I too young to notice idk. Dude ellam best screenplay vaanguthu nowadays.
Barring the illogical scenes, this movie stands the test of time better than most commercial masala movies.
