Is it time to upgrade my Canon 6D + 200mm wildlife setup? If so, what order?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been shooting wildlife for a while now with a Canon 6D (Mark I) paired with a 200mm prime lens. While this setup has beautiful full-frame rendering and excellent low-light performance for those early morning/late evening golden hour moments, I am starting to hit a wall with fast-moving subjects.

To give some context on what I'm struggling with, the 6D definitely shows its age when it comes to action:
The Autofocus System: With only 11 AF points (and realistically only the center cross-type point being reliable), tracking birds in flight or unpredictable moving animals feels like a game of pure luck. AI Servo just can't keep up with modern standards.
Burst Rate: The 4.5 frames per second max continuous shooting speed means I miss the exact micro-moments of action (wing positions, head turns, etc.).
The Reach: Being full-frame, 200mm doesn't offer quite enough reach for smaller birds or distant wildlife, forcing me to rely on heavy cropping that eats into my 20-megapixel resolution.

I want to step up my game, but I'm on the fence about the smartest path forward. Should I upgrade my glass first to get more reach, or drop the DSLR body for a modern mirrorless system with animal eye-tracking and faster burst rates?

If you were in my shoes, in what order would you upgrade, and what specific gear would you look at next? (Staying within the Canon ecosystem—either EF or RF—is preferred since I have a few other lenses, but I'm open to all advice!)

I have some photos I’ve recently taken with this setup.

Thank you!
